Dialogue is always important in a working environment. Saying this is important but fostering this is the tough part. Management should be open and honest and try to create these opportunities and not say please communicate in the last 5 minutes of zoom call and say they did their best. This is something that is hard to produce in a remote working environment. These are built over months and years of side conversations at the office or at lunch and without those many opportunities, it is extremely difficult to build trust and dialogue that is constructive.

This timing may be better assessed by duties that are being performed. If it's a matter, where there is it a lot on the line on the outcome, you must be direct and honest about feedback as waiting too long could be detrimental to the task at hand. Yes, we should be mindful of the person, but at the end of the day, you hire professionals to do the job and if a person needs to here unwanted news, that's on them to listen to the feedback and they should not take it personally. A lot of this is dealing with people and those skills are hard to teach and must be earned over many interactions. It is not fair to berate someone, but if someone messes up, they need to know it's unacceptable unless you foster an environment of poor results.

Always be clear on the way you deliver a message. Then assess the personality type of the person you are talking to. After that it is fair to be honest. Be professional in how you deliver the feedback but be honest about their performance and how you perceive it.
