I have recommended strategic low-risk M&A to many of my large USA restaurant clients as the best way to penetrate international markets but to no avail. The franchising model takes years to scale and impact a public company's EPS. Create Restaurants Holdings (Japan) and Jollibee (Philippines) are on the right track in my opinion. Private Equity groups around the world are flush with restaurant groups they would like to sell, but USA chains are not the likely buyers. In this industry, it's easy to get caught up in impressive sales numbers. Many were excited earlier this year that the restaurant industry was going to hit “record sales”. However, true success is measured by the profits that you consistently generate. Where are the headlines stating the average profit margin for a restaurant has grown from just 5% to 15% - 20%? 🤔 Right – those types of headlines don’t exist. Only an estimated 5-10% of operators are hitting those required benchmarks. At KRG Hospitality Inc. we’ve talked to so many independent bar, restaurant, and hotel operators who say “sales are great, but I am not making any money for myself or my family”. Infact, we just completed an assessment on a brand doing $6M USD in sales per year with prime costs of close to 79%. Yes – 79% in combined food, beverage, and labor costs despite their excitement for achieving $6M USD in annual sales. While high sales figures can look great, it's the profitability that reveals the true health and sustainability of your business. We have to change the narrative around what’s successful and not set the benchmarks for our businesses so low. As an industry, we have to craft and execute customized strategy plans and playbooks that consistently achieve 15-20% or more profits. This benchmark is in-fact possible with an impactful action plan; no matter the concept, the economy, the labor challenges, or the market.
