As we wait for final rules from the IRS on section 45V green hydrogen tax credits, we are watching electrolyzer manufacturers closely. The requirement in the proposed rules for hourly matching of renewable electricity purchases to electrolyzer power consumption could push demand toward proton exchange membrane (PEM) and solid oxide electrolyzer cell (SOEC) technologies, which are able to more quickly scale up and down based on power availability. China leads with 61% of global nameplate electrolyzer production capacity as of our most recent report (check the comments below for the link to the report 🔗⬇️), but as more countries deploy electrolyzer system manufacturing in the future, we expect China’s share to decline to slightly under 50% by 2027. Chinese manufacturers have been early adopters of pressurized alkaline technology, which has significantly lower costs than PEM technology. Alkaline technology does not use any rare elements, while PEM technology uses Iridium, a very rare metal with limited global production of about 7 tons per year, mostly concentrated in South Africa. As CEA’s Christian Roselund noted in a recent interview with Christian Robles from E&E News (also in the comments below 🔗⬇️), hourly matching provisions would increase the cost of green hydrogen production and reduce electrolyzer demand in the short term, but may be necessary for social acceptance to support industry growth. One thing is clear: we’re unlikely to see any big moves in U.S. electrolyzer manufacturing or deployment until the industry receives final rules. #GreenHydrogen #Alkaline #PEM #SOEC #Electrolyzer
