Peer-to-peer marketplaces are an incredible phenomenon. They have leveraged what venture capitalist Bill Gurley calls the "connective tissue of the internet" to bring us closer together. And the trust, brand value, and delightful user experiences of the likes of Lyft, Airbnb, Zopa, Lending Club, and Watsi have made these marketplaces immensely popular and successful. In fact, the success of Amazon and eBay from 1999 to 2006 has since ushered in the emergence of 20 new consumer services marketplace companies that represent more than $15 billion of market capitalization (Stephanie Tilenius, Forbes October 2013). Some of today's marketplace businesses are now multi-billion dollar enterprises toppling the traditional incumbents in their respective industries.

But while much has been discussed about why and how marketplace businesses are great business models, what is less often discussed is how marketplace business models can help solve some of the world's biggest problems. Thanks to their inherent ability to reduce inefficiencies of time, cost, and connectivity, marketplace business models not only create tremendous value, but they can also create tremendous impact.
