“Ideal for young professionals” usually means they don’t want to pay much, but that’s okay because younger folks are usually just so grateful they have been offered a job at all that they won’t try to negotiate. 😅 As if to emphasize this, the job posting contains the following: Hiring range minimum = please inquire. Hiring range maximum = please inquire. Not even a Salary Band reference that someone can go try to unearth from the bowels of their HR website. 🤦‍♂️ This is one big reason higher ed staff jobs are perceived as inaccessible. #salarytransparency needs to be more of a thing in higher education hiring!

Happy National Workforce Development Month! I'm thrilled to see Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs gaining momentum and becoming increasingly popular. These programs offer more than just practical skills for the workforce; they also teach essential life skills that help individuals thrive in the workplace, at home, and in the community. But let's take it back a few notches. It's hard to talk about workforce development without mentioning career development. Understanding why we are in our chosen fields and what drives our passion for our work is crucial. For those struggling to find answers, it might be helpful to consider what skills they have or need to find meaningful work. Pondering these questions can add depth to one's work and it allows them to see where there sweet spot is in the workforce. They may decide to upskill, or they may be a galvanizer who recruits and plugs individuals in where the workforce gaps lie. Whatever avenue it may be, if individuals know their potential, purpose, and passion, then they will make great contributions to workforce needs all while enhancing their career trajectory.
