PRWeek's great 2024 Business Report highlights the key challenge facing our industry. Communications is more important than ever. Comms and policy leaders are being asked to play far larger roles as business partners supporting ever more stakeholders. So why did the industry suffer so much in 2023 after many years of growth? As an sector, we are not adapting fast enough to the needs. Organizations are desperate for help but also under tremendous financial strain. They now need both senior level counsel and advisory support as well as deep domain expertise to actually produce. By and large, our industry is still split by this chasm - between strategic and tactical. Clients cannot afford to separate these, either in time or money. Earlier this month Allison Carter shared a great article about the 4 categories to measure in a #mediarelations campaign. Demonstrating value/ROI has been a huge topic in the media relations world for as long as I can remember, and frankly, measurement has often been inconsistent in the industry. The 4 categories are: 1. Output (e.g. # of media interviews, # of content created, # of media inquiries responded to) 2. Volume (e.g. SOV, engagement) 3. Quality (e.g. message resonance, tone, prominence) 4. Achievements (e.g. brand awareness, conversions) I've certainly measured across these different buckets, but I've not necessarily categorized them in this way. While some companies aren't able to fully delve into measuring across all the areas within these categories, it's important to align with any business on their goals and over time, continue to define and refine ways of measurement. I'm curious as to which categories/metrics folks lean on these days (thank goodness AVE - or advertising value equivalent - didn't make this list!), and thoughts on this categorization overall.
