In the 1960s , there came an increasing need for standardizing Operational processes in the manufacturing industries. Why exactly was this so important at the time? You see the 60’s was a period in history when many innovations were coming up. It was in that period that Automation/computerization, Lean Manufacturing & supply chain Globalization was starting to take off. And this meant dealing with so many large factors at the same time. In order to create a medium amidst all these , where Operations remained efficient and didn’t dwindle in the aspect of Quality, A Japanese engineering educator named Hiroyuki Hirano came up with the 5S methodology for Operational Excellence. This methodology proved to be so effective, that it has been adopted across other industries outside manufacturing, including pharmaceutical and healthcare companies. Incase you were wondering what these 5S are, they are as follows; - Sort (Seiri) - Set in Order (Seiton) - Shine (Seiso) - Standardize (Seiketsu) - and Sustain (Shitsuke) These 5 cadres have been used by multiple top tier health care providers in exponentially improving their process, even in modern times. Now What exactly does each of these mean and how do we use it? I’ll be sharing this and more in my next post. Stay tuned. This weekend, we've successfully organized the Lean Workshop for management levels. This refresh training enforces their knowledge and ignites a spark of enthusiasm, equipping them with the useful tools to lead the changes in the organizations. Key Lean tools like DMS-Daily Management Systeam, Value Stream Mapping, PDCD, and Kaizen empower managers to unlock hidden potential, streamline processes, and eliminate waste. As they delve deeper into Lean principles, Hoshin Kanri-a strategic planning tool is newly introduced. Special thanks to my participants for the enthusiasm and energy that you guys bring to the workshop. It shows your engagement, eager to apply newfound insights to drive continuous improvement. Managers, as the culture architects, play a pivotal role in fostering a Lean mindset. What to do if you're not achieving your Quality Improvement project aim?🤨 There are many ways you can regroup and/or pivot, but remember: Try not to judge success based on a single point in time. If the data shows a positive trajectory, you're still improving! #QI #QualityImprovement #PtSafety

This article is worth reading if you have taken part in quality improvement work or new process changes that didn’t sustain or required a re-do. It discusses challenges including lack of personnel, project fatigue, and competing priorities. ⭐ A key takeaway is to involve frontline staff who are doing the work on the project team. In healthcare, this could include bedside nurses, charge nurses, residents, attendings, secretaries, techs, and anesthesia- all of whom add key information on barriers and challenges, along with ideas on what will work in their environment. This approach helps with buy-in and builds the effort from the ground up. As a former PSN, this was my go-to strategy, and it worked! The staff also appreciated having a say in the changes being made. Tips for leading change are also included- from an excellent book titled “Leading Change” by John P.
