You're caught off guard in a meeting. How do you regain your composure and deliver a compelling speech?
This depends on what 'caught off guard' entails. Is it information or an opinion or is it just someone who has decided, behind your back, to blindside you with a decision or proposal you were not aware of? Is it someone challenging you whom you did not expect? The list is endless. Regardless. Take at least three deep breaths and think for at least one minute before saying anything. Keep the brain-to-speech filter on first. Words uttered loosely into the wind will never return. Be wise. Dig deep. And then say or ask what needs to be said with intent and a high degree of emotional intelligence.

How can you communicate with physicians who resist change?
Change is uncomfortable, and part of the resistance to change is losing what makes you comfortable. And change often involves compromise as well. Physicians need to see evidence that change will make processes better, improve patient care and outcomes, or create a better work environment. Given the collective trauma many physicians have experienced over the last three years, it will take time for trust to redevelop. Respectful, collegial collaboration as equals at the table is bridge to lead successful change. As employees, physicians are feeling subordinate to the power and influence of many stakeholders in healthcare organizations who are holding all of the purse strings. We need a seat at the table again.
