Hey everyone! Exciting news! Next week, we'll be sharing a cool new dashboard we've created using the Yukon Government Contract public registry. 🎉 https://lnkd.in/gGZVN7bi This interactive tool lets you search through a snapshot of the public database with ease. Want to see how we made it? Stay tuned! And hey, if you have data that could be more usable in an interactive dashboard like this one, let's talk! #Yukon #Dashboard #DataVisualization #PublicRegistry

This is my 17th article on developing a corporate Technology Strategy and the 11th of 13 Foundations, the Data Strategy. I recently had a nice day at the beach with my wife, Shari. The picture is from the beach bar at Sand Pearl on Clearwater Beach. Like the Software Architecture Strategy, Data Strategy is far-reaching and can vary greatly. My goal is to provide what to consider in building a Roadmap. Also, this is Foundational. I will cover Data Strategy more when I get to Disruptive Aspects of Technology Strategy. Matthew Chapter 7:24, “Everyone who hears [Jesus’] teaching and applied it to his life can be compared to a wise man who built his house on an unshakable foundation.” Again, to understand where to go with Data Strategy, refer to the Strategic Directives I reviewed in an earlier article, so that your strategies are aligned with the business. Some FOUNDATIONAL aspects to Data Strategy are; · Data storage o SAN technology. o Database management systems. · Data protection o Backups. o Offsite storage of data. o Data replication. o Data segregation / separation. o Encryption. · Internal user access o Reporting. o Analysis tools. · Data Governance. With the distributed Enterprise Data-Center, your data could be spread all around the world. Your Data-Center Strategy may dictate how your data is stored (AWS, Azure, boutique hosting, co-location, or on-prem SAN, etc.). Standardize storage solutions in each data-center as best you can towards greater protection, access, and governance. If you have an on-premise SAN, consider the various storage options such as flash storage for high-speed requirements and less expensive traditional drives for data that is accessed less often. Check if you have any NAS devices, they can be like crabgrass, and what should be done with those. You will likely inherit a database management system or “stack”. You don’t know how many times I was performing an acquisition assessment and found database versions that were 10 years old. Update your database to a current version for security, performance, and support reasons. This can be a lot of work to upgrade. Of course, CONFIRM your backups (incrementals, log/audit trails, daily, weekly, etc.) are working. Test them and make sure they are stored offsite. If you have high-availability requirements, set up data replication for a failover instance. Segregate your data across databases and hardware for performance reasons and so that a single security breach can’t access all of your data or enough to make sense of it. Encrypt the data-at-rest. Make use of the out-of-the-box reporting and analysis capabilities of your stack and ensure your colleagues have proper knowledge and use of them. Finally, for good Data Governance, ensure the proper controls are in place for curating, accessing, and analyzing data. Consider the compliance frameworks that must be adhered to. Next, I’ll review Process and Compliance strategies.

It is interesting to see this consolidation occur. How many more GMS firms will also consider merging/combining? What is the next area in the philanthropic sector to see mergers? Impact Analysis? Community Foundation space? Donor Engagement? DAF.... something....? I like and appreciate efficiency, but want innovation. A question to keep in mind is how these combinations will change and hopefully benefit Changemakers who should be at the center of our work.
