I will summarize here: "Your main job is not to make your manager happy, it is not to make execs happy." I've been sick the last week. Not being able to do much besides sit around and consume a painkiller-heavy diet, I took the time to finish reading "An Elegant Puzzle: Systems of Engineering Management" by Will Larson. Now, I am not a manager. I work mostly as an individual contributor. What I found most valuable is that this book offered me a new perspective to look at organizational- and team challenges. Many of the topics discussed I could not map to my personal day-to-day responsibilities, but they do allow me to place in context the various environments in which I have worked, and currently work in. This awareness is valuable in its own right. The book mostly takes the form of "If you're in this situation, here are the things that I had to take into consideration, and here are the tools that helped me". It is clear that the author has a rich experience and is able to offer a lot of context. As such, I think that it's doubly important to approach any novel problem with a "it depends, but how about..." approach, as opposed to reaching for the book's suggestions verbatim. Ultimately, I have to concede that I will probably have to re-read this book in a year or so, which I am sure will present me with more "a-ha" moments. Additionally, the hardcover edition is beautiful and makes a fancy addition to any coffee table. Would recommend!

Task-specific models and routing architectures are the future. Robert Nishihara, co-founder and CEO of Anyscale, is seeing hybrid strategies emerge, where businesses are evaluating different types of models for different use cases. With the rapid advancement of AI tech, it won't be long before open-source models are "good enough" for the majority of business tasks. The natural progression from here is to develop smaller, task-focused models using proprietary company data. As Robert puts it: "You're going to need small, fast models. And task-specific models have a huge advantage when it comes to cost and speed because you can achieve the same quality with a smaller model if it's specialized." Another interesting development: the growing use of routing architectures. Imagine a classifier as a kind of traffic controller for your AI queries. It assesses the complexity of each query and directs it to the most suitable model: simpler requests are handled by smaller models, while complex ones are passed on to larger, more sophisticated models. “If you do it right,” Robert says, “you can achieve something like the cost of the smaller model with the quality of the more advanced model.” Dive deeper into AI architecture trends in my full discussion with Robert on the B2BaCEO podcast here: https://lnkd.in/ghigvERn
