As behavior analysts, we should strongly believe that it is vital to listen to and learn from the diverse voices within all communities. For example, we should recognize that we are not "experts" in autism itself, but rather, we are educated in behavior analysis. It is crucial to advocate as clinicians that behavior analysis is a comprehensive field that extends beyond just the autism population. Our knowledge and expertise of the science also apply to a range of other contexts and populations. We should firmly believe in the power of collaboration and inclusivity. We should actively engaging with all communities we serve and gain invaluable insights and perspectives that can shape our approaches and interventions. We should understand that each person's experience is unique, and it is through listening and learning that we can provide the most effective and individualized support. We should be committed to challenging any preconceived notions and stereotypes surrounding ABA by having conversations and advocating only after effectively listening to those notions and stereotypes. From the ASAN: "The Judge Rotenberg Center (JRC) is an institution in Massachusetts. People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), mental health disabilities, and learning disabilities live there. Both kids and adults live at the JRC. Many autistic people live there. Some people at the JRC are forced to wear an electric shock device. This device is used to punish the person wearing it. The device punishes people by giving them electric shocks. These electric shocks are very painful. The JRC shocks people for small things like refusing to take off their jackets or stimming. People with disabilities and our allies have been fighting to stop the JRC. We want to stop people at the JRC from getting shocked. We’ve been working together to try to stop the JRC for more than 10 years." Join our campaign. We chose to learn EMDR because we felt a deep connection to its potential to help those trapped by trauma. It wasn't part of our standard doctoral education but was something we pursued to better understand and address the root causes of issues like OCD, panic attacks, anxiety, and low self-esteem. By viewing these through the lens of trauma, we found a more resonant and effective approach for our patients, allowing us to offer deeper, more meaningful support.
