All Counter drone systems have advantages and disadvantages, so it is clear that as customers look to implement or buy CUAS the approach is normally to layer in different elements tailors to their needs and budgets. Spotter buoys airdropped in the path of Hurricane Helene made direct, real-time observations of extreme conditions generated by the Category 4 storm. In the GIF below, we overlay NASA/NOAA GOES-16 satellite imagery with the drift tracks (orange lines) of the Spotters (yellow pentagons). A subset of the 13 Spotters deployed ahead of the storm passed particularly close to Hurricane Helene. SPOT-31995C (southernmost drift track) observed significant wave heights of 38.5 feet, which translates to maximum wave heights of 70 feet. That is comparable to the height of a five-story building. SPOT-31995C drifted a long distance due to the powerful conditions generated by Hurricane Helene. During the six-hour period when it was closest to the storm, the buoy traveled approximately 27 miles.
