CPS Lectures is a discussion series on the arts, health, business, and culture founded in 2003. The series takes place in the vibrant Lower Haight neighborhood of San Francisco. The lectures honor the memory of Kelly's late father, Cyril Patrick Shaughnessy, Jr., who died in 2002. Mr. Shaughnessy loved robust discussions and civilized discourse as a way to enrich his own understanding of the world, and in that spirit, these gatherings are a superb opportunity for friends and strangers alike to listen, learn, and connect. The series is now a program of the diaTribe Foundation. Past Speakers at the CPS Lecture Series: • Gretchen Rubin, a best-selling author (The Happiness Project and Better Than Before), lived up to her billing as the “happiness guru.” • Dr. Zeke Emanuel, author of Reinventing American Health Care, a fellow at the Center for American Progress, and an advisor for the Affordable Care Act, explained the challenges in our health care system. • Sheryl Sandberg, the Chief Operating Officer of Facebook and author of Lean In, spoke to us about equality, confidence, and growth. • Dr. Robert Lustig, a UCSF pediatric endocrinologist who wrote Fat Change: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease, discussed the controversy surrounding sugar. • Dr. Fran Kaufman, the author of Diabesity: The Obesity-Diabetes Epidemic That Threatens America, a former president of the American Diabetes Association, and currently the Chief Medical Officer of Medtronic Diabetes, discussed the rising threat of “diabesity.” • Dr. David Kessler, a former Commissioner of the FDA and the author of the End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite, described major public health challenges of the day. • Dan Pink, the best-selling author of To Sell is Human: The Surprising Truth About Moving Others, among other books, described the changing world of work.
