Despite a slowed pace of change and progress toward gender equality (134 years!) some encouraging trends in the 2024 Global #GenderGap report, released today by the WEF. Notably in the realm of economic participation and opportunity - while the gap is only 60% closed worldwide - the time to global parity narrowed by 17 years since 2023. While economic prospects for women and girls are more threatened by continued downturns, prolonged crises, and geopolitical and geoeconomic uncertainty, the adoption of economic policies to advance gender equality has increased overall - though with dramatic variation in adoption, resourcing, and implementation across regions. Buoyed by mounting evidence and real time payoffs-public and private sector investments in childcare are gaining momentum and enabling women to work. While labor force participation is on an average upward trajectory over prepandomic levels (now 65.7%) pay equity gaps remain high and leadership gaps are actually widening. ♻️♻️♻️ World Circular Economy Forum #WCEF2024 News: OECD Environment launches Paper on the basic facts and key principles of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) This is a collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH UN Environment Programme Ellen MacArthur Foundation PREVENT Waste Alliance ❓❓❓ What are Extended Producer Responsibility schemes, why do they matter and how can they be used to help beat plastic pollution?  What are the paper's key takeaways?    🗑️ EPR systems have a long history. EPR schemes can increase material recovery and separate waste collection of targeted products ♾️ EPR schemes can help enable a transition to a circular economy. EPR schemes have traditionally focused on waste collection and recycling. Novel fee structures are supporting waste prevention by rewarding producers for more circular product design. 🥤 EPR schemes could help meaningfully combat plastic pollution. I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Julie Kjestrup on the Climate Group's 50 Shades of Green podcast to discuss my vision for Mercy Corps as we partner alongside communities to adapt to climate change. It’s always a joy to share more about the depth and breadth of my colleagues’ work to deliver locally led climate programming that’s specific to their unique contexts. And we know there are many effective climate adaptation solutions we can scale, where we’ve seen incredible success in places like the Caribbean, Ethiopia, and Kenya.  For instance, the Islands in the Caribbean are among the most at risk to the effects of climate change, with storms and hurricanes becoming more intense and devastating. Through Mercy Corps’ Caribbean Resilience Initiative, we partner with local organizations to deliver necessities like food, cash, and water after climate emergencies, and help communities build long-term climate resilience. From training on water distribution and solar energy systems, locally operated Resilience Hubs connect people with internet, off-grid solar energy, community gardens and more so communities can better weather these inevitable storms.   In the Horn of Africa, severe drought and flooding are putting immense pressure on pastoralist and farmer livelihoods. Mercy Corps supports communities to make data-driven decisions to combat climate change.
