♻ Consumer preferences AND behaviors in resale are changing. ♻ If you haven't been to your local thrift store lately you might not believe me, but it's happening. Here's further proof: 📢 "Last year 52% of consumers shopped for clothing secondhand and on average they spent about half their apparel budget on resale, according to ThredUp’s latest resale report." And for us here at Trove, we're seeing another wave, that 📢 "buying secondhand directly from the brand is increasingly consumers’ preferred way to shop, currently holding 20% share of the resale market. Consumers shopping resale tend to trust brands more than marketplaces. They appreciate a brand resale site’s ability to let them compare items side-by-side and to find a more curated selection on offer." The legacy sneaker giant beat out Adidas and Foot Locker, which tied for second place, while upstart competitor On Running came in last among Gen Z and millennials.” “The Consumer Sentiment Index from consulting firm AlixPartners asked 9,000 fashion shoppers from Gen Z to boomers about the factors that drive their purchasing decisions and how retailers stack up against their competitors.” “Kohl’s was the No. 1 department store choice among Gen Z and boomers, while millennials chose Nordstrom and Gen X chose Macy’s.” “Alix’s consumer sentiment report revealed a host of other findings for retailers to keep in mind as they enter the ever important holiday shopping season, including the No. 1 factor that would drive shoppers to a competitor. The majority of consumers surveyed, or 66% of respondents, said they’ll shop at a different retailer if the product they’re looking for isn’t in stock.” ″”’Right product, right place, right time’ echoes in every retail conference room, yet as retailers have expanded online assortments and marketplaces to attract new customers and traffic, it’s become more challenging to avoid frustrating shoppers when they can’t find their size or their desired item in-store,” the report said.” “For example, only 9% of a retailer’s online assortment on average is available in stores, based on a sample set of 30 retailers, according to the report.” “As retailers look to stand out and attract attention online, they’ve started offering far broader digital assortments. “According to Circana’s Omnibus survey from last August, 60% of K-12 parents reported that they typically make their back-to-school footwear purchases “close to the start of school.” Last year, footwear sales peaked during the first two weeks of August, just ahead of the peak school start weeks, according to Circana’s Retail Tracking data.” “Back-to-school season aside, Circana noted that parents have been prioritizing footwear purchases for their kids throughout the year. In the 12 months ending April 2024, year-over-year sales of footwear to be worn by kids and teens under 18-years-old grew by 7%, while sales of footwear for adults declined by 3%, according to Circana’s Consumer Tracking data. While sales for all wearers ages 7 and older increased, most of the growth came from sales for teens, who are primarily wearing adult shoe sizes.” “Last year, Circana found the percentage of footwear units sold on promotion from June through August returned to pre-pandemic 2019 levels. This came after two years of volatility: a dip in 2021 when supply was low and demand was high, followed by a sharp increase in 2023 when supply was more plentiful, but demand was slower.” “When asked what factor tends to influence their footwear purchases for kids and teens, just one-third of consumers cited promotions and discounts – behind quality, price, and child or teen requests, according to Circana’s Future of Footwear study.” - Zachary Russell
