Answering patient calls and determining how best to help them. Providing physical support for patients or residents with daily activities and personal hygiene, including bathing, dressing, getting out of bed, - using the toilet, walking, standing, or exercising. Turning and repositioning bedridden patients. Ensuring patients or residents receive appropriate diet by reviewing their dietary restrictions, food allergies, and preferences. Obtaining a wide range of information from physicians, caregivers, and nurses about patient conditions, treatment plans, and suggested activities. Measuring and recording food and liquid intake and urinary and fecal output and reporting changes to medical or nursing staff. Recording vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respiration rate as requested by staff. Examining patients to detect issues requiring medical care, including open wounds, bruises, or blood in the urine. Reminding patients to take medications and nutritional supplements. Noting observations of patient behavior, including complaints, or physical symptoms to nurses. Stay up to date on CNA training and facility policy and procedure.

This pivotal change aims to uphold the highest standards of patient care and professional conduct. With hospital wait times continuing to increase across the US, Connecticut, created the Emergency Department Boarding and Crowding Working Group. The group presented a bill - SB181 - to the Connecticut Senate Public Health Committee to begin to address the issues, which then passed the state legislature with overwhelming support. From the Connecticut Mirror article, “CT patients are waiting days in emergency rooms for a hospital bed. Lawmakers want to know why: The bill requires hospitals to start reporting information next year about back-ups in the emergency department, including the number of patients in the ER, the number waiting to get into the ER, the number waiting for a hospital bed to open up, and total wait times. In an interim report published earlier this year, the workgroup pointed to emergency room boarding as the primary driver behind increasing wait times. Boarding occurs when staff decide to admit a patient to the hospital, but the facility doesn’t have enough capacity to provide an inpatient bed, leaving the patient waiting in the ER. Some of the factors that drive boarding are insufficient staffing, delays in cleaning available beds, and delays transferring patients to other facilities. “Connecticut has the opportunity to put a lens on it, to understand that it is a patient care issue, which is why we are asking people to look at the data and to frame it as a quality measure,” [Dr. Christopher] Moore said.
