The queue is indicative of what is to come in terms of future resources. While it is inflated and backlogged, it is very illustrative of where the resource mix is headed. Some great stats from the queue that Ryan Wiser and the Berkeley Lab team highlighted: 🔹 Nearly all solar in CA has BESS as a hybrid resource 🔹 Most solar in the West has BESS as a hybrid resource 🔹 Over half of all solar queue requests include BESS as a hybrid resource 🔹 Offshore wind requests are picking up (and coming online) 🔹 Gas (and hybrid gas) are still present 🔹 Other resource types are nearly non-existent currently Hybrid resources are the (near) future. MCE and GSCE begin first phase of 20GW solar-plus-storage plan in California. California community choice aggregator MCE and developer Golden State Clean Energy (GSCE) have partnered to work on a solar-plus-storage project in California, the first in a plan to install up 20GW of solar and 20GW of energy storage. MCE and GSCE will work on a solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) project as part of a development programme known as the Valley Clean Infrastructure Plan. The Valley Clean Infrastructure Plan aims to repurpose up to 130,000 acres of drainage-impaired or water-challenged lands in the Westlands Water District in Fresno County. The District is the largest agricultural water district in the US at 614,000 acres, or 2,400 square kilometres, and serves the agricultural sector. At full buildout, the plan would include up to 20GW of solar and 20GW of energy storage, which, if achieved, would cover one-sixth of California’s electricity requirements in 2035, MCE said. In the nearer term, MCE and GCSE have entered a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for 200-400MW of solar and BESS. 🌞 California's Rooftop Solar Market Faces Transition Challenges 🌞 In April 2023, California made a significant shift in its rooftop solar policy, moving from Net Energy Metering (NEM) to a Net-Billing Tariff (NBT) structure. This change slashed the rate paid to customers for exporting excess solar production by about 80%. A year later, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LNBL) released a report evaluating the impact on the state's rooftop solar market. Key Findings: 1️⃣ Installation Rates: Rooftop solar installations in 2023 were roughly equal to 2022, but 80% of these were NEM 2.0 systems installed before the April 15 deadline to secure better rates. 2️⃣ NBT Installations: Approximately 50,000 systems have been interconnected under the new NBT structure, alongside 200,000 NEM systems during the same period. 3️⃣ Market Indicators: Data from EnergySage, the largest residential solar quote site in the U.S., indicates a 40% drop in quote requests since the policy change, suggesting a substantial market contraction. The LNBL report highlights a significant decrease in market activity, with monthly quote requests averaging about 60% of historical levels since the new policy's implementation.
