There are plenty of ways we rely on interoperability in our daily lives – and we never think twice about it. Like sending a text message that is received by your daughter – that shows up exactly the way you sent it. We only think about interoperability when it doesn’t work and creates frustration for users – like the green bubble versus blue bubble text message debate. It’s no big deal when the photo of your dog is pixelated when it makes it to your friend. But when it comes to the exchange of your health information between your doctor, pharmacist and insurance provider – the consequence of incomplete information risks the safety and quality of your care. We’ve come a long way in healthcare interoperability – but we’re not there yet. Dr. François discusses NYU Langone's approach to innovation, which leverages data to enhance quality, safety, workforce efficiency, and patient satisfaction while achieving financial goals. He encourages startups to aim for a "moonshot" in their endeavors. Dr. Christopher Longhurst, chief clinical and innovation officer at UC San Diego Health, discusses the impact of AI on healthcare. While he thinks there is overpromising results for the next 3 to 5 years, emphasizing the importance of rigorously evaluating tools and innovations to ensure it works, Dr. Longhurst is very optimistic about AI's long-term impact on healthcare. He envisions that in 7 to 10 years, a wide array of advancements will significantly improve the experiences in both delivering and receiving care. He advises startups to focus on People, Process and Technology. Startups' problem solutions need to align with workflow and generate value for the system. AI and Med Tech in Focus   Implantable Device Reverses Opioid Overdoses Researchers at MIT and Brigham and Women’s Hospital have developed an implantable device that detects and reverses opioid overdoses by autonomously administering a dose of naloxone. Naloxone is a drug that binds to opioid receptors and blocks the effects of heroin, fentanyl and other opioids. Called iSOS, the device has sensors that continuously monitors a user’s respiratory rate, heart rate, body temperature and blood oxygen saturation and uses machine learning algorithms that are trained to recognize the signs of overdose using the cardiorespiratory data collected by the sensors. When the device detects a suspected overdose, the device buzzes and sends an alert to a user’s phone. If the alert is not cancelled, iSOS administers a rapid shot of naloxone.  The device is about the size of a stick of gum and implanted under local anesthesia. It has a wireless rechargeable battery that lasts 14 days and a 10-milligram refillable drug reservoir. ISOS has been shown to be effective in reversing the effects of overdose 96% of the time and could help people who are at the highest risk of re-overdose. Because the naloxone dose is automatically delivered in a “closed loop” survival is not predicated by timely intervention of a first responder or a bystander Further research is being done to miniaturize the size and optimize battery life. Despite some challenges in digital therapeutics and telehealth, investments in general care ($213.4M) and health benefits navigation ($140.7M) are promising. Latest #PitchBook data for #HealthIT investment shows a preference for later stage investment across healthIT that pre-dates the VC downturn and current interest rate environment. Even though healthIT has been more resilient to current headwinds compared to health care services and PPM plays, perhaps it speaks to a need to scale solutions and points of saturation for new entrants. "...In the lower middle market, we are beginning to see more examples of a phenomenon we have anticipated for a while: PE firms and PE-backed companies acquiring VC-backed startups. Lower-middle-market PE firms perennially complain that VC- backed companies expect too-high multiples, and these firms would generally prefer to invest on a multiple of EBITDA rather than a multiple of revenue..." Speaks to a convergence that would allow PE-VC M&A on both ends of the startup spectrum. #HealthcareVC #healthcarePE
