Federal Contractors, Are you following the same boring outline for your federal capabilities briefings? It’s time to bring it back to life! 1. Do your homework. Know who are their current contractors doing what you do. Offer some professional tips and tricks to teach your clients how to get more out of then(and if they can’t, you can take their place or fill the gaps. 2. Include your differentiators, unique best values, and intro your Subject Matter Exoerts. 3. Offer Whitepapers and training material, articles and facts as to why you offer something Nader, better, faster AND more cost efficient. 4. Include Past Performance and proof you can do the work. 5. Hack! Welcome to Squadron Jobs. Our mission objective is to provide aircrew with free resources, tools, and networking connections that make a successful military to private sector transition in the defense contracting world. For hiring managers, we offer our services as a traditional recruiter. Our team didn’t start out planning to be defense contractors. Through one way or another, we found our way to this industry via word of mouth while searching for post-retirement jobs at the airlines or through business school. Since then, we have given a few words of advice to our friends but now want to give detailed write-ups of what we have learned. Too many times veterans follow well-worn paths or don’t explore all their options simply because they don’t know! Use all tools to increase your chances of securing a federal career. If you're eligible (and you probably are) that includes the Schedule-A! Two non-competitive special hiring authorities (SHA) that enable federal agencies to hire anyone that meets the minimum qualification requirements, are the 30% or More Disabled Veteran and the Schedule-A (Individuals with Disabilities) SHA. 👉The 30% or More authority allows an agency to non-competitively appoint any Veteran, who has received a service-connected disability rating of 30% or more. Which for our active-duty (AD) Service Members (SM), won't happen until they're no longer AD. Additionally, not all Veterans submit a VA claim or receive a ≥30% disability rating. Now... 👉 The Schedule-A (Individuals with disabilities) SHA allows agencies to non-competitively hire persons with certain disabilities. To be eligible, a person must have a diagnosed condition AND a Schedule-A letter (USAJOBS page on the Schedule A: https://lnkd.in/gpaK45wz). So... what does that mean for YOU? To the Veterans and transitioning SM reading this, we're not fans of using terms like “person with disabilities” when we refer to ourselves, BUT, transitioning SM, will you or have you submitted a VA claim? #Veterans, do you have a rating of less than 30%? Perhaps you never filed with the VA because you have diagnosed medical conditions that aren't service connected... Well... The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has determined conditions like Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI); hearing loss; PTSD; and or missing extremities make you eligible for a Schedule-A, but so do conditions like ADHD; migraines; IBS; and asthma. To be eligible to utilize the Schedule-A SHA you need: 1) A diagnosed medical condition. Use the OPM form SF256; https://lnkd.in/gqrQcipR; if it's on the list, then you're most likely eligible! 2) A Schedule-A letter (template: https://lnkd.in/gZ4nsF7Z) signed by a licensed medical professional (including doctors at military treatment facilities/ MTF hospitals & clinics), OR by a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor. NOTE: Ensure they understand that signing the letter is not stating you "are disabled" for VA rating purposes or to determine state/local disability benefit eligibility. The Schedule-A letter confirms that you have a condition for federal hiring purposes; that's it. **Current and future Commanders out there** The Army offers an amazing opportunity for soldiers transitioning to the civilian sector called the Career Skills Program (CSP). It helps set them up for success in their next chapter. It is a critical resource especially for junior soldiers who are embarking on this journey blind and at risk for an unsuccessful transition. Unfortunately, I am seeing a growing trend for commands to deny soldiers or intentionally create obstacles to hinder their pursuit. I would be willing to wager that those same teams plan to use the benefit themselves when they transition though. I ask that we as a force change this aspect of our military culture. When viewed through a holistic lens; this is the foundation of “taking care of our soldiers”. From an organizational perspective prior service makes up the bulk of our recruiting efforts and unsuccessful transitions continue to push the bell-curve downwards. Amended Tax Returns for Military Retirees Who Have Received Retroactive Payments of VA Disability or CRSC Special Tax Considerations (Information for Veterans | Internal Revenue Service (irs.gov)) Veterans may be eligible to claim a federal tax refund based on: •An increase in the Veteran's percentage of disability from the Department of Veterans Affairs (which may include a retroactive determination)  or •The combat-disabled Veteran applying for, and being granted, Combat-Related Special Compensation, after an award for Concurrent Retirement and Disability. Special tax considerations for disabled Veterans occasionally result in a need for amended returns. Combat-Injured Veterans Tax Fairness Act of 2016 The Combat-Injured Veterans Tax Fairness Act of 2016, went into effect in 2017. Under this federal law, Veterans who suffer combat-related injuries and are separated from the military are not to be taxed on the one-time lump sum disability severance payment they receive from the Department of Defense. This law instructs DoD to identify Veterans who were taxed in order for them to file an amended return to receive their refund. Go to Combat-Injured Veterans Tax Fairness Act Claim Information for more details. VA Disability Benefits Disability benefits received from the VA should not be included in your gross income. Some of the payments which are considered disability benefits include: •Disability compensation and pension payments for disabilities paid either to Veterans or their families, •Grants for homes designed for wheelchair living, •Grants for motor vehicles for Veterans who lost their sight or the use of their limbs, or •Benefits under a dependent-care assistance program. If you are a military retiree and receive your disability benefits from the VA, see IRS Publication 525 for more information.
