Since our first reveal at the Miramar Airshow last fall, we've been asked numerous times if the DR-7 could fly using only solar power. These inquiries were sparked by a single image on our banner featuring a solar-panel-clad variant. This image merits further explanation: For both modes of flight (hover and cruise), there are vastly different power demands. Hovering in place requires approximately 7 times the power needed for forward flight. For this reason alone, relying on a solar 'skin' for all electrical power would be completely unfeasible, as some type of high-density power storage would be required. However, in certain applications where relatively short or infrequent trips are made such as in medivac/first responder roles, or at military outposts where the ancillary benefit of passive energy production (a flying generator) could supplement other equipment, a solar-skinned variant could make a lot of sense. A greater performance advantage could also be achieved in a stripped-down single seat 'sport' model with smaller battery for enthusiast and recreational flyers.
