How can you encourage innovation and creativity in your department?
Show you're open to innovation by posing provocative questions, by demonstrating a willingness to challenge the status quo, by asking "if you were me..." questions, by encouraging your team to run experiments to test different methods and see which ones work best, and by showing you have a sense of humor particularly about yourself. Create an ethic around workplace conversations that stipulates that anyone can add their ideas to the mix but not subtract from anyone else's, that no one can use their experience or expertise to knock down someone else's idea or assert theirs is better because of their seniority or salary.

Your non-profit organization has a volunteer retention problem. What can you do to keep them engaged?
Our research reveals the majority of volunteers saying, in effect, "they use too much of my time and too little of my talent". Many volunteers say the real reason they were asked to volunteer was a pretext to increase giving but, giving them little meaningful work is backfiring. Put real issues in front of volunteers. Assign more to task forces and fewer to standing bodies. Approach those with exquisite talents and ask them do pro bono consulting. The advisor board model has been over-used.
