When I was in the Kellogg Executive Education program, I had the opportunity to sit with Loran Nordgren and David Schonthal (who was one of my favorite professors) in a workshop. Lauren and David wrote a book called “The Human Element” which focuses on the concept of fuel versus friction. Fuel is making an innovation as attractive as possible to appeal to the buyer. Friction is the combination of inertia, effort, emotion, and reactance that keeps people from embracing the new product. Innovation can come from reducing friction rather than boosting fuel. For example, what historically kept people from buying new, heavy objects like furniture or appliances was the question of what to do with the old ones. So, now it’s common for the purchase to include services that haul them away. With that add-on, people can embrace new and bigger furniture or appliances. You can have the most fuel in the world, but without understanding what stops people from making the leap to your product, your idea may never take off. #FrictionTheory #ProductDesignChallenges #objections #innovation

🌍Have you read the TRCA STEP Program report on hybrid air source heat pumps yet? ➡️Electrically-driven air-source heat pumps (ASHPs), especially cold-climate variants (CCASHPs), offer a low-carbon heating alternative. ➡️Hybrid systems also come with lower capital costs. ➡️This study examined six homes in The Region of Peel, Ontario, with CCASHPs installed alongside existing furnaces. CCASHPs provide both heating and cooling, and they were installed in the study homes to replace aging air-conditioner units. ➡️Utility data and operational data were analyzed for Winter 2023/2024. 🌍Findings revealed substantial home gas consumption reductions (62%-91%) and near break-even utility costs! These corporations have achieved something phenomenal in terms of growth and with unprecedented speed of execution.Their top executives shared their experiences, challenges faced and how with collaborative teams across globe they solved these challenges and delivered and continue to deliver exceptional value to their customers and stakeholders. Few takeaways from this LeX - be customer obsessed . Understand their pain points and deliver solutions which exceed their expectations. - High rigor and discipline in every tasks- be it people development , cost out etc etc till the desired outcomes are met - Develop habit of ferocious intentionality in everything you undertake - foster culture of learning and don’t let business outgrow your own professional growth ; be ahead of curve #empower people to chose their own learning skills - leverage data in business decision making and not on “sage” advices! - failures are okay as long as we learn from them and make organization better and more resilient.
