This is so important. The lack of Black physicians in general. and in many specialties works against physician-patient concordance which we know leads to better health care experiences and outcomes. I also suspect that most docs trained at #HBCUs will have a special eye for #EDI, #DEI, and #bias in themselves and in the environments where they provide care. As we look to grow the next generation of #physician leaders, let’s hope this leads to greater #diversity and #equity. Bloomberg Philanthropies

Four years have passed since the murder of Mr. George Floyd, leading to a flurry of anti-racism institutional pledges across America. Today, DEI policies are under attack across the country, despite their potential role in addressing healthcare disparities, like Black youth suicide.   Black youth are in crisis and have been for over 20 years, and Black youth suicide rates are rising faster than any other racial/ethnic group. Poverty and lack of access to mental healthcare are often cited as major contributing factors, but there is another far more insidious problem: even when Black children do access mental health, they be further harmed instead of helped. Medical racism, the racist behavior of medical professionals, can and does lead to devastating lapses in the care of Black youth, but there is no brave spaces to discuss them out in the open—until now.   The inaugural Black Youth Mental Health Clinical Case Conference Series, directed by my mentee, Dr. Amanda Calhoun, has been ongoing since January 2024 at the Yale Child Study Center. Experts met monthly to discuss cases of Black youth struggling with complex mental health issues, where medical racism was a primary contributor to the poor care they received. This is not just any case conference! Put on by Birthmark Doula Collective, a leading voice in birth justice advocacy, Black Birth Matters is a powerful convening that will feature workshops, panel discussions, open dialogue, art, and healing, focused on the intersections of birth and social justice. All are welcome. The Black experience will be centered. Founded in October 2016, the Black Birth Matters Summit has emerged as a vital initiative to address critical issues faced by Black birthing families in Louisiana and beyond. The summit serves as a platform for collaborative strategy development, bringing together Black birth workers and allies to advocate for systemic change and improve birth outcomes. What is birth justice?  birth justice [burth juhs-tis ] noun   1.         Birth Justice is a movement that believes when birthing people recognize their innate power to make the best health decisions for themselves and their families during all stages of the pregnancy, birth, and the post-birth period, that power will have a transformational impact on their family and community.   2.         The long history of trauma and reproductive oppression that Black communities and other underserved groups have experienced is the constant force that drives and shapes the Birth Justice movement. To challenge systems of oppression, such as racism and sexism in reproductive care, Birth Justice advocates for culturally-appropriate, person-centered care while challenging disrespectful care. It also supports the sharing of knowledge amongst communities and improves access to breastfeeding support and traditional birth-workers, such as midwives and doulas.    3.         Birth Justice is a component of the reproductive justice framework. In 1994, a dozen Black women met at pro-choice conference in Chicago and constructed the concept of reproductive justice. Led by visionaries, such as Loretta J. Ross, Lynn Roberts, Erika Derkas, Whitney Peoples, and Pamela Bridgewater, reproductive justice was a direct response to the intersectional systems of power and oppression that often prevented the attainment of full health. a.         This definition is inspired by the work of Black Women’s Birth Justice, Southern Birth Justice and SisterSong.   4.         ALL BIRTHS SHOULD BE JUST BIRTHS.
