At the IDEA School, we are Reggio Emilia-inspired, we believe in every child’s ability and desire to learn, and we believe that social and emotional development are as important as academic development — just as critical in our children’s ability to succeed in the world, yet rarely given adequate attention in K-12 education. At the IDEA School, we are Reggio Emilia-inspired, we believe in every child’s ability and desire to learn, and we believe that social and emotional development are as important as academic development — just as critical in our children’s ability to succeed in the world, yet rarely given adequate attention in K-12 education. We are an independent K-8 school located at the Tucson Museum of Art in downtown Tucson and will open our doors on August 11, 2014. We are opening with Kindergarten through 3rd Grade for the 2014-15 school year and we will add a grade each year until we reach K-8. Initially, our students will learn in one mixed-age group with two collaborators (teachers), with plenty of opportunities for smaller group work through our projects and explorations. As we add grades in the future, we will always maintain mixed-age learning groups, but the composition of those groups will change to meet the needs of our students. (For example, next year we may have one group that is K-2 and another that is 3rd-4th graders, or K-1 and 2nd-4th graders, depending on student body composition and needs.) We engage our students in developmentally appropriate project-based-learning, based on their own interests, ideas and questions. For information on how to apply, click here. We are building a school on the basic premise that if children are allowed to follow their interests and pose and seek the answers to their own questions, and if teachers collaborate with them and extend upon the learning in which the children are naturally engaged — connecting children with the concepts, skills and resources needed in service of their learning and project goals — amazing things can happen.
