😨 Bay Area companies hit with hundreds of layoffs, including biotech firm’s 75% reduction of U.S. workers 😨 Numerous Bay Area companies slashed hundreds of jobs in the past week, a sign that downsizings are continuing and expanding beyond the tech sector San Francisco-based biotech firm FibroGen said it would cut around 75% of its U.S. workforce, following the failure of two pancreatic cancer drug clinical trials. The company “plans to implement an immediate and significant cost reduction plan in the U.S.” Despite the wave of layoffs, the Bay Area’s unemployment rates are relatively low. 🔻 San Francisco had a 3.6% unemployment rate in June 🔻 Santa Clara County had a 4.1% rate 🔻 Contra Costa County was higher at 4.7% 🔻 California’s rate of 5.2% https://lnkd.in/g4vyCV2e

Thanks to Datanami for sharing my thoughts. Gen AI is amazing, and we are in the golden age of AI development. For AI to be adopted by the masses, we need a robust way to identify and mitigate risks. A lot of work is being done through the open-source community and leading tech providers around AI safety. With regulations coming in, there is optimism for a responsible AI future.
