Change happens, expect it, prepare for it, and adapt and overcome. Way back in the day, the tech refresh rate was 7 years. Today, it's six months. Back in the day, you were told to become an expert at one thing. Today, you need expertise in two areas (the rise of the T-Shaped executive). Building teams is no different. - expect change, surprises, failures, and wins. You must adapt but there are steps we can take to de-risk bad hires thus bad teams. Cut cookie-cutter questions, go off script; Be conscience of, search for cultural alignment; Set expectations and hold accountable; Meet more than once, invite your team/others to interview and provide feedback; Listen to and trust your gut; and Expect to get it wrong, now and then.
