Even as the popular image of climate change is an emaciated polar bear on a diminishing icecap, protecting the environment isn’t just about conserving nature for nature’s sake. Protecting wildlife and wild spaces is about protecting ourselves, it’s about ensuring our own wealth, health and future well-being.

When we devalue nature, we deprive ourselves of its riches. In our blindness to nature’s tangible benefits, we not only risk that our children never see the wonders of a vibrant coral reef or a majestic glacier, but also make it more likely that they experience a natural world only knowing the destructive power of its storms and droughts and never the awe-inspiring bounty of its blooms and harvests.

After Hurricane Harvey, Jesus Contreras, a paramedic who is a Dreamer, spent six straight days helping victims. Alonso Guillen, another Dreamer, gave up his life trying to rescue people. On Sept. 5, the Trump administration announced that they and other DACA participants like them were no longer welcome here.

In one week, Mr. Contreras and Mr. Guillen displayed more acts of heroic bravery than many native-born Americans do in a lifetime. In one day, with one heinous act, this administration chose to ruin lives, destroy promising futures and tear apart loving families.

The Dreamers represent the best of this nation’s values, and we are all stronger with people like Mr. Contreras and Mr. Guillen among us. This administration has turned dreams into nightmares for so many brilliant and big-hearted people. It is a wonder that those who made this happen can sleep at night.

Albert Einstein. Elie Wiesel. Madeleine Albright. Sergey Brin. Vladimir Nabokov. Wyclef Jean. These refugees have enriched America through their contributions to science, culture, politics, business and the arts. Every day, refugees and their families make America a better place.

On Friday, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the most powerful country in the world shut its doors to those most in need. Through our cruelty and barbaric ignorance, we condemn innocent people to horror, persecution and, in many cases, certain death. In doing so, we betray our ideals and make America a less safe, less wealthy and less compassionate nation.

We rob ourselves not only of their contributions, but also of our own humanity.
