potential of the built environment and serve as focal points for inspiration and education in their local
communities. They are comprised entirely of healthy, low-impact building materials, harvest…The affordable housing development community is uniquely situated to benefit from the
philosophy and application of the Living Building Challenge in order to effectively accomplish its
mission and goals. Living Buildings are designed to maximize the positive social and environmental
potential of the built environment and serve as focal points for inspiration and education in their local
communities. They are comprised entirely of healthy, low-impact building materials, harvest all their
energy and water on-site, and place equity and social justice at the forefront of their design goals.
As the world’s most advanced and rigorous green building certification program, the Living
Building Challenge can enhance the positive impact of affordable housing while mitigating
the persistent inequalities often present in low-income communities. -

Here are some critical paths forward I ws reflecting on after the event: Understanding the Present to Shape the Future: The key to implementing sustainability starts with understanding what is already in place. By creating a clear roadmap and a process for change over time, we can effectively transition to more sustainable practices. Policies are crucial in guiding this transition, and making strides with improvements in project deliveries and the growing concept of energy as a service. Opportunities in Commercial Space Redevelopment: With 25% of Seattle’s 100M square feet of office space currently vacant—mirroring a broader 10% vacancy rate across the USA—there’s a significant opportunity to redevelop these spaces. The post-COVID shift to remote and hybrid work has changed the landscape of our downtowns. Redeveloping these spaces with enhanced building envelopes, upgraded windows, efficient HVAC systems, and incorporating housing, rooftop bars, and restaurants can breathe new life into these areas. Revitalizing Downtowns: To fully utilize downtown infrastructure and support small businesses, we must address the high cost of investment. Interest rates need to drop to make these investments feasible. When they do, we can transform our urban centers into vibrant, sustainable, and enjoyable places to live and work, easing urban transportation and fostering community. Seattle is poised for a sustainable transformation, and the time to act is now!
