Another week, another webinar… this one is hosted by AIA Illinois and it’s one of my favorite topics to present: Materiality of Masonry. Please join us next Monday if you’re able. The enduring popularity of masonry in all its forms is largely attributed to the intrinsic properties offered by the materials of brick, block, stone, terra cotta, tile, and terrazzo. But in this era of rapid innovations in construction materials and techniques, does masonry continue to provide value, and how have these materials and assemblies evolved? This seminar takes a close look at the historic architectural significance held by traditional masonry materials, but it also challenges participants to use these materials in innovative ways, showing examples of contemporary design to balance their classic applications. The program then builds on the materials themselves, showing common wall and floor assembly details and emphasizing the importance of designing for performance and contructibility. Finally, it addresses the topic of sustainability and how masonry and tile’s composition of natural and healthy ingredients and their inherent durability translate to buildings that are healthy, long-lasting, and able to be repurposed generations after their initial construction. The Gordie Howe international Bridge. 2nd tallest in North America (220 meters/ 722 feet). Connecting two counties. Finally connected, and poised to be a new icon for Windsor/ Detroit. Can it be? “The Gordie Howe International Bridge, known during development as the Detroit River International Crossing and the New International Trade Crossing, is a cable-stayed international bridge across the Detroit River, currently under construction… * A dedicated multi-use path that will accommodate pedestrians and cyclists * Six-lanes: three Canadian-bound, three US-bound * Total length: approximately 2.5 kilometres / 1.5 miles * Clear span of 853 metres / 0.53 miles - the longest main span of any cable-stayed bridge in North America * No piers in the water * One approach bridge on each side of the crossing to connect Ports of Entry in Canada and the US * Once complete, the Gordie Howe International Bridge will be among the top five longest bridges in North America.” It will be interesting to see if this bridge reaches iconic status for the two cities and for the region.

a collection of post-fire chicago residential and commercial building window hood keystones housed in the bldg. 51 material archive. there is so much information packed into each and every stone here, but i'm growing tired writing about all this stuff, so forgive me for increasingly shorter descriptions. the earliest keystone (middle) was a common stock pattern executed by the chicago terra cotta company (precursor to northwestern) around 1872-73. the "gray body" terra cotta is comprised of white clay, sourced from indiana. very few buildings ornamented with this type of terra cotta survive. the keystone to the far right is comprised of "artificial stone" (also identified as "cast" or "concrete" stone), which is a synthetic product that was used mainly during the 18th and 19th centuries to imitate natural building stones. the keystones were designed and manufactured by the frear artificial stone mfg. co., chicago, ills. the others are made of either sandstone (quarried from berlin, ohio) or joliet/lemont limestone also referred to as "athens marble. sadly, post-fire chicago buildings adorned with joliet limestone facades and/or "trimmings" are still being demolished at an alarming rate. courtesy of bldg. 51 archive.
