#SOHKBB Are you your labels? Do you accept labels assigned to you by others? How do you label other people? In the world today, there are many people working to label you. It could be advertisers. It could be your fellow graduates from high school or college. It could be (gasp), someone thinking of political or religious terms. Perhaps people are demanding you accept their labels? So, how do you handle labels? Well, Dan, can you give me some examples. Just keep doom-scrolling social media or turn on the “news” channels for how this plays out in the “real” world. And, since you asked, here is a short list: Good - Evil Conservative - Liberal (or a version thereof) Ginger, Blonde, Brunette, Blue or Green hair Atheist - Spiritualist Kind - jerk Straight, Gay, Trans, BI or any number of letters with the “ ” attached at the end Why do people feel the need to label? Why do they try to convince you “their” label is the only one that counts? Glad you asked. Humans, as a rule, look to seek inclusion, community, belonging, and validation through their labels. This need is so great they will go to great lengths to convince you their labels are valid for them and you. This is also a form of power/control they seek to wield over you. Those who don’t know “WHO” they are will typically fall prey to this gaslighting. Remember, those who seek to divide seek to control. How do you find out “WHO” you are? By investing the time to determine your values for yourself, not what is thrust upon you by well-meaning friends and family. When you do this, you will start to connect with the inner you. And, you will start to fall in love with YOU. The one thing I seek to find is a good HUMAN. Show me a person that seeks to know the inner you with a motive of love and respect rather than impose their own label upon you. That is someone worth knowing. In our current #SOHKBB project, my co-authors are good humans. We don’t agree on everything while recognizing the intrinsic worth of each individual and their own journey. When you begin with the motive of LOVE (the highest form of energy), life will smooth the road in front of you. Take the time to connect with these great humans in the first comment as we get closer each do to our book release. Looking back on my LinkedIn journey for the last six months. This Chinese Proverbs says it best: "一分耕耘, 一分收获 - Yi fen geng yun, Yi fen shou huo" We reap what we sow. Before I got consistent engagements daily and built business relationships here, I invested time and effort by reading great tips, resources, and advice on LinkedIn to help me get started. How I know if I applied what I learned is to take action. I started to post daily while learning. To take action, having a clear intention is important. If not, I am just following what others do blindly and have no direction. My intention is to empower and inspire leadership beyond concepts, techniques, and methods and how leadership is the key to having the life we want. In the beginning, I had people making assumptions (without actually asking what I do) that because of my focus on leadership, I am just going to recycle and/or regurgitate what other people say about leadership. I already had concerns, so hearing that really didn't help. It is true that many people are talking about leadership and at that it can be construed that way. Clearly, I had a challenge - to attract people to read what I write and be engaged with it. The most daunting part: ↪ I have so many things to share, but I didn't know where to start and how to streamline them into one story in one message. Here's what I did: → I read other content creators' posts. → I learned their pattern of writing. → I listened to sharings by different content creators. → I read about the dos and don'ts. → I learned about the algorithm. → I used my result to guide me if I am on the right track to make the necessary corrections. → I invested a consistent amount of time daily to learn and research from others. Here's what I learned: → Keep it short and simple with depth. → When my intention is clear, it will not go wrong. → The more I can own my story, the easier it is to write. → Telling and giving advice is less effective than sharing. → The more I can connect my own dots, the better I write. → Posting at the same time every day creates a familiarity. → The more I practice and adjust, the less I need to explain to get the key points across. → Connecting personal stories to the learnings I share makes it easier for people to relate. → Sharing lessons and how they apply to my results is more powerful than trying to be an expert. #SOHKBB  Journal #21 Far from Sight, Close In Heart During my daily walk on the seabed, I recently pondered the saying, "Out of Sight, close in Heart." Regardless of location, this routine is my commitment to achieving my daily 10,000 steps. As I walked, observing the sea's retreat and the frozen yet alive flora and fauna, a piece of sargassum caught my attention. Instantly, I wanted to share this discovery with my collaborators and book friends at #SOHKBB. How do I stay close in heart with my book buddies despite knowing them not long ago? The answer lies in the dynamics of shared interests and emotional resonance. 1️⃣ Shared Passion:  Our bond, rooted in a love for literature, allows us to bypass superficiality and dive into meaningful discussions, fostering intimacy and understanding. 2️⃣ Emotional Resonance: Books evoke deep emotions. Sharing these experiences creates a unique connection, strengthening our bond. 3️⃣ Intellectual Engagement: Thoughtful book discussions stimulate intellectual and emotional connections, enriching our understanding and fostering mutual respect. 4️⃣ Mutual Support: Book buddies provide emotional support, creating a safe space for vulnerability. Even brief support leaves a lasting impact, making us feel valued. 5️⃣ Timeless Connection: Bonds formed over shared literary experiences are timeless. Emotions and insights remain vivid, keeping the connection alive in our hearts. Our connection's depth isn't measured by time but by the intensity and quality of shared experiences. These bonds, rooted in passion, resonance, engagement, and support, ensure we remain close in heart even when far from sight. #sohkbb Journal The life of an entrepreneur reminds us to expect the unexpected... Leaning to adapt to changing circumstances is an early lesson... We start with an idea and a plan, but market realities may require us to reflect, revise and, on occasion re-route... That can challenge our confidence, both personal and professional... There may be moments of doubt and even fear... My biggest fear is of heights. I'm not afraid I'll fall...it's the magnetic pull to jump and see what happens, and the greater the height the greater the pull... Hence the image below... Fear can be corrosive, and when it arises it's absolutely vital we have supports in place...and not every entrepreneur does... Prevention is always better than cure, so having those supports in place from the time we start thinking of becoming an entrepreneur eliminates so much potential stress... I'm deeply grateful to be part of a group of exceptional people, entrepreneurs all, who have committed their very real experiences and lessons to print in The School of Hard Knocks Authentic Business Handbook for Success - Written by Entrepreneurs for Entrepreneurs... Japanese proverb: 七転び八起き Nanakorobi yaoki It’s a motivational proverb that translates to: Fall down seven times, get up eight times. Now, if you want to use this somewhere like in a speech, you need to be ready because there will always be the kinds of you who need to scrutinize everything. “Wait, if you fell seven times… wouldn’t you get up seven times, too?” And then you’ll be like, “STOP BEING CORRECT. I didn’t come up with the proverb. People apparently didn’t learn math in ancient times!” You don’t want to be defending yourself like that. So here are the theories as to why it’s eight not seven: 1. Because someone helped you stand for the first time when you became a toddler. 2.Because in ancient times, seven and eight were used to express large numbers, similar to how we use “like a dozen times!” 3. Because the Kanji character for eight signifies good fortune Of course people in the long past must have noticed that it didn’t make sense logically, but what makes proverbs memorable is sometimes not logic but more the ease of saying it, the rhythmic feel it carries, and the emotional effect it brings ☺️.
