🌊 #MEPC81 Highlights: From 18 to 22 March 2024, the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) convened at IMO Headquarters in London for its 81st session. Among the key agenda items were initiatives to combat climate change, enhance energy efficiency, manage marine litter, and improve ballast water management. 🛳️ Tackling Climate Change: MEPC focused on cutting GHG emissions from ships and implementing the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy. An "IMO net-zero framework" was outlined, aiming to regulate GHG emissions through a new global fuel standard and pricing mechanism under MARPOL Annex VI. 📝 Next Steps on GHG Emissions: MEPC set forth comprehensive impact assessments and expert workshops to further analyze mid-term GHG reduction measures. Correspondence groups were established to develop regulatory frameworks for onboard carbon capture systems and address social and economic sustainability themes. 🔄 Revised Life Cycle Guidelines: Updated Guidelines on life cycle GHG intensity of marine fuels were adopted, including revisions to emission factor calculations and the development of a GESAMP Working Group on Life Cycle GHG Intensity of Marine Fuels. 📊 Measurement and Verification: MEPC reviewed fuel oil consumption data and carbon intensity reports, emphasizing progress towards carbon intensity improvement targets by 2030. Updated Guidelines for ship energy efficiency management plans were also endorsed. 🔍 Ballast Water Management: MEPC advanced the implementation of the Ballast Water Management Convention, adopting operational guidelines and amendments to improve monitoring and reporting practices. 🌏 Emission Control Areas: Proposals for ECAs in Canadian Arctic Waters and the Norwegian Sea were approved, aiming to reduce nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides emissions. ♻️ Ship Recycling: Progress was made on the implementation of the Hong Kong Convention, ensuring safe and environmentally sound ship recycling practices. 🔊 Underwater Noise Reduction: MEPC endorsed an action plan to reduce underwater noise from commercial shipping, emphasizing environmental sustainability. 🚢 Future Work: MEPC outlined plans for further developments in alternative fuels, including hydrogen and ammonia, and addressed urgent operational matters related to ballast water management and onboard carbon capture systems. Classification Society DNV has published updates to its rules for the classification of ships and offshore structures. In addition to rules supporting the development and deployment of decarbonization technologies, the new in-operation class notations seek to bring clarity to the responsibilities of class customers for notations that have a mix of design and operational requirements. “One of the most striking aspects of the maritime industry today, is the huge diversity of challenges and opportunities where our customers are looking for classification support,” said Geir Dugstad, DNV Maritime’s Global Technical Director. “It’s not just new fuels, but ways for owners and managers to demonstrate their efficiencies, new vessel types to unlock new markets, through to advanced technologies like onboard carbon capture.” Read more here…   https://lnkd.in/e_fScaC7   #maritimeindustry #shipping #marinesafety #carboncapture
