Ericsson Consumer Lab conducted extensive research across 10 global markets with current and prospective extended reality (#XR) users, revealing four pivotal insights shaping consumer expectations for augmented reality (#AR) experiences over the next five years. I #love Page No.10 1. Stage one: #Smartphones are the most accessible #devices for consumers, with social and informational #AR experiences dominating the use case landscape. At this stage, smartphones serve as the dominant platform for consumer-friendly AR experiences, with many transitioning from traditional smartphone apps to the XR realm. Today, AR experiences on smartphones encompass exploration and decision-making assistance, such as #translation, #navigation, and #information #scanning. Additionally, #consumers appreciate AR #filters / #lenses on #social #apps and AR gaming. However, the quality of current AR experiences is constrained by the capabilities of smartphones. 2. Stage two: Lightweight, portable AR/MR devices are expected to become more accessible to consumers, with #geospatial AR experiences diversifying the use case landscape. At this stage, alongside smartphones, consumers expect #lightweight, #portable AR/MR devices to become more #accessible. They are willing to connect these devices to their smartphones, aiming to elevate their experiences. As geospatial AR technology advances in more precise #location #tracking and enhanced #environmental #awareness, consumers can expect a wider range of location-based and surroundings-aware experiences. Notably, consumers express interest in AR-enhanced #sports and #musical events, AR #tourist displays, and location-based AR art displays. Additionally, location-unbounded education, collaboration and #virtual #screens for productivity enabled by AR will also gain traction among consumers. 3. Stage three: Consumer-friendly standalone AR/MR devices will begin to emerge, with native AR experiences further diversifying the use case landscape. In this stage, the use case landscape will continue to evolve, offering more #advanced and #native #experiences to consumers. For instance, consumers will be able to enjoy #mixed #reality #cinematic experiences anywhere and have #3D #digital #exercise #companions during workouts. Simultaneously, devices will evolve to meet these demands. As consumer expectations for use cases and user experiences surpass the capabilities of smartphones and earlier tethered AR/MR devices, more capable yet consumer-friendly #standalone AR/MR devices are expected to emerge. These devices may feature built-in connectivity and will gradually become available to a wider group of consumers, elevating consumer experiences to a new level. “Multi-orbit” often means solving different challenges and creating different outcomes for SES’s diverse mix of customers. Here, we demonstrate the value of LEO to MEO RF relay for TT&C and data downlink with our partners at #PlanetLabs. This will eventually enable faster satellite tasking, rapid downlink for time-sensitive imaging data, quicker insights & ultimately better decision making. #NASA #SES #multiorbit Building the future one step at a time.

Nokia to acquire Infinera for $2.3B. For me, Telecoms, especially Telecom Network vendor landscape, is about 2 things - Technology innovation and M&A. In a way, this is what keeps this industry moving. Though we see Nokia and Infinera here, the roots of these companies are in different countries/regions and backgrounds. For example, Finland-based Nokia acquired Alcatel-Lucent (a merger between France-based Alcatel and US-based Lucent in 2006) in 2016. Same for Infinera - they acquired Transmode in 2015, and Coriant (Coriant merged with Tellabs in 2013) in 2018. Earlier in the year we saw Hewlett Packard Enterprise acquiring Juniper Networks for $14B. In 2020, Ribbon Communications acquired ECI Telecom for $486M. In 2021 Adtran combined with ADVA for €880M. Therefore, it's clear that the Telecom Network vendors are making their portfolios fuller by, among other things, combining/expanding IP and optical capabilities or sometimes introducing both Carrier and Enterprise product lines. At the same time, there are others like Ericsson and Cisco who are very much keeping their stronghold in their specific expert areas. There are optically strong players like Ciena too. The question is; should I be, as a vendor, a one-stop shop for solutions (access to core, wired/fiber & wireless, fixed & mobile, optical & IP, SDN/NFV, OSS/BSS/CRM/ERP, ...) or keep my expertise within my expert area? Looks like the complete E2E portfolios are going to win, especially at a time where the System Integration among multiple vendor platforms is getting complicated and costly. Some call this vendor-lock-in. So, be careful and play your cards wisely. On the other side, the Chinese Telecom Network vendors, Huawei, and ZTE Corporation are watching all these M&As happening in the Western world.
