Don't waste your time with TDD. Writing tests-firsts is only necessary when... ... you want your coworkers to be able to refactor what you wrote this morning. The title is clickbait, but I appreciate your curiosity. Thank you for sticking along! I find that TDD as a whole is tightly connected with other Extreme Programming principles and disciplines. The outside-in-flow is going through the entire delivery cycle: 1. We are wrong about most requirements 2. So we want to deploy early and frequently 3. With features that were built just-enough and just-in-time 4. Expressed with written and automated tests 5. That match our understanding of desired behavior 6. So that anyone on the team can change it 7. When we figure out what we were wrong about TDD comes in between step 3 and 6. TDD is amazing, layered, and so nuanced. 🤯 For instance I was just talking to a really smart and skilled at testing developer who does Test After Development (TAD). He's very proficient at it and embraces AI to help him write his tests and refactor. What gets me is that he has a HUGE blindside that he assumes that his implementation to the problem is the right thing. 🤔 I used to think the same thing until I got proficient with TDD to the point where I stopped thinking about remembering to do TDD (how to do it, RGR, Arrange-Act-Assert, mocking...etc). Once I achieved automaticity with TDD, a whole new world of software development where I was asking myself "What's the simplest possible next step?", "Is this doing what I need it to do?" "Am I going the right direction with this?", all with incredibly short feedback loops (30-120 seconds). When that door opened I realized the huge blindside that most developers have. I realized how my Evil Programmer Monkey Brain 🐒 tries to deceive me all the time into implementing things I don't need or want. There is no amount of explaining, diagraming, lecturing, or use of metaphor that I (or I suspect anyone else) can do to enlighten folks into this epiphany. Like a Runner's High or having that perfect Zen moment meditating. It is something that folks that become truly proficient with TDD will experience. The first time you experience it, to me, it's like the clouds parting ⛈️ and the sun shining 🌤️ through...the clarity, simplicity, and ease is just THERE! When I'm writing code, I now get those moments frequently. It's amazing and self-reinforcing. For those that don't get it and want to get it I'm always here to help and I'm sure there are many of my LinkedIn colleagues that might be connected to folks reading this that can help you too and feel the same. For those that say TDD isn't for them. 🤷‍♀️ No problem. I get it, you have to be you. The TDD Journey isn't for you. Go forth and keep that blindside. Someday you might be ready. Reach out then.
