The number one question I get from brokers is about how to expand to Mexico. It's gotten a lot easier for a handful of reasons: 1. Cargado exists. We've got multiple brokers using our platform to expand their service offering in Mexico. 2. There are more and more Mexico freight experts in the industry who are moving onto new roles and looking for their first leadership opportunity to spearhead building out Mexico. 3. You don't need any sort of permit or authority to broker cross-border Mexico freight. You just need Cargado and a TMS that can handle Mexico locations. Did I mention that you just need Cargado to get started with Mexico freight? Chances are you have a friend working at one of the 55 brokers using Cargado today. I get a lot of messages asking about Mexico expansion. Some brokers have an existing cross-border operations team but are looking for new ways to grow. Others have been purely focused on domestic freight and are starting to see cross-border opportunities. I love the fact that Cargado can help logistics companies on both ends of the spectrum. 🚚 DAT Freight & Analytics Dry Van Spot Linehauls vs. FreightWaves Outbound Tender Volume Index: How Do They Correlate? 📊 As we look at two key indicators in the trucking industry—DAT Van TL Spot Linehauls and FreightWaves SONAR OTVI—some interesting correlations and divergences emerge. 🔹 Strong Market Correlation: In periods of market growth, like Q3-Q4 2020 and Q1-Q2 2021, both tender volumes and linehaul rates surged. For instance, Q2 2021 saw a 57.6% increase in linehaul rates, closely matched by a 50.9% rise in OTVI. This suggests that capacity tightness and demand increases tend to drive both rates and volumes upward simultaneously. 🔹 Lagging Responses in Downturns: In 2023, while volumes gradually fell, rates plummeted more sharply. Linehauls dropped by 32.7% in Q1 2023, while OTVI declined by 28.9%. This shows that freight rates can respond more drastically than volumes during market downturns as capacity remains resilient. 🔹 Market Disconnects: At points like Q1-Q2 2022, we see abrupt shifts in rates while volumes change more gradually. For instance, a 16.9% increase in rates Y/Y was followed by a steep 13.6% decline Y/Y, while OTVI’s changes were more modest. This suggests external shocks (fuel prices, capacity) can disproportionately impact rates. 🔹 Rate Lag Relative to Volume: In 2019, volumes grew modestly, but linehaul rates continued to decline. This suggests oversupply—while there was more freight moving, capacity outpaced demand, keeping rates depressed. 💡 Key Takeaway: These indicators often move in tandem, but they can also diverge due to external market pressures. To get a full picture of the freight market, it’s crucial to track both rates and volume indicators (Industrial production, inventories, imports) to understand the balance between supply, demand, and capacity dynamics.
