While my Movember Seattle Ambassador moustache MAY be sparse this month, that doesn’t mean we should stop having meaningful conversations about our wellbeing. This Mental Health Awareness Month, I encourage you all to take simple steps to improve your wellbeing and check in on those around you. Mental Health can effect all of us, regardless of race, creed, religion or gender. It's important to know that it's ok to NOT be ok, and that there are people that care about you and resources available to you so you don't have to be alone. Nearly 20% of adults are experiencing mental illness, which equates to about 50 million people. So you are not alone. The numbers for males in particular are staggering, in part because of the macho culture that we've promoted for years of not opening up, sharing what is going on and being vulnerable. Globally 1 man dies by suicide every minute of every day. In the US, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among men aged 15-44, about 106 men a day dying by suicide. In my industry (construction) we have the 2nd highest rate of suicide. It's almost 4x as high as the national average. For every man who dies by suicide, 100 people are affected.
