A builder told me "I used to just keep the check book in the truck" that was my accounting Now he is doing over $10MM a year and that system no longer works. it became apparent real fast that he needed an accounting system, with checks and balances. A system that got the bills paid without him. Then there was Project Management and Marketing and Sales and HR and the list goes on. Systems need to be built for where you are going, not where you are. Updating a system is hard Yet it is far easier and faster than building one while keeping the ship afloat it becomes the classic "learning to fly while building the plane." it can't crash...no pressure there! so, the first step is to determine where this business is going. build systems to fit that and grow into them. My client is a true salesman, he hates operations, but sees the need. that is why I am there. To build business systems to support his sales skills. do what you enjoy, get help for the rest. At the end of Safety Week, I want to raise a point for consideration. Washington State is updating the Construction Crane Bill of 2010. I'm all for safety and meeting standards. But there are two considerations to discuss. One is that if you make it overly complicated and expensive to have a crane, people will just no longer use a tower crane. I would point to NYC especially, or California as places that don't use cranes as often as they could. They'll use a mobile a few days, or a rotating telehandler and have people move materials by hand. This looks great for less crane violations, but it's just transferring damage to the workers backs on the smaller jobs. Two, complicated codes lead to complicating behaviors and reads on the rules and personalities get involved. My experience was that the Crane Department would show up with what their bulletin point focus was each month on how they are "currently" interpreting the complicated language. This would take me away from critical work that was actively going on to massage the inspectors egos. They might have a different interpretation of a rule and cause drama right in the middle on an operation instead of noting their concern and circling back to discuss it. In and of itself it's unsafe. Keep the code simple and clear. While I love specificity, when the power safety section is 9 pages long, you might need a lawyer with you to decide what it means. This isn't safety. This leads to arguing over minutiae and it distracts us from the process of being safe. The code must be written in a way the average field person can understand, or you endanger us all. Please keep that in mind.

For my commercial construction network, I'm curious about the best construction software for tracking jobsite progress. We currently use Procore, but I'm unsure if they are staying current, especially when it comes to photo documentation. Daily reports and photo documentation are key for us.
