I wrote Hacking SaaS - An Insider’s Guide to Managing Software Business Success to create a single resource for SaaS professionals and those who seek to join the industry. I define SaaS Professionals as founders (like you), venture and private equity investors, management teams, and others in sales, customer success, and finance organizations.
The book’s opening section compares perpetual and SaaS business models and discusses each in its historical context. The next section describes the financial profile of a typical SaaS company. I included this section because the typical reader needs to understand these basics. Then, I provide a framework for evaluating SaaS business models, which I organize into three segments – Enterprise, Small & Mid-Market (SMB), and B2C – based on the differing Go-To-Market strategies. Then we take a deep dive into the strategy for each type of business model. In each segment, we discuss the KPIs for measuring success and demonstrate the math behind each KPI. The math gets a little dense, but the sections will allow the reader to understand why the numbers matter. I compare and contrast Horizontal and Vertical SaaS business models in the last section. Finally, I included a glossary of all SaaS terms used in the book.
