  • Rope Access Methods for Long Span Structures

International Cable Supported Bridge Operators' Conference

Inspection access of cable supported structures can be limited by many variables such as geometry, structure location, elements installed, and loading limitations which do not allow for standard inspection equipment such as Under Bridge Inspection Units (UBIU) or conventional lift vehicles. Rope access meets and/or exceeds standards of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 1926 Subpart M Fall Protection. This paper will summarize the training, methods and procedures…

  • Walkway Over The Hudson: Climbing Inspection and Analysis of a Historic Long-Span Truss

    2008 - 25th Annual International Bridge Conference - IBC-08-87

ABSTRACT: The 6,768-foot long Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge is proposed for re-use as an iconic State Park that will be the world's longest pedestrian bridge. An in-depth structural inspection consisting of industrial rope access climbing techniques and diving formed the basis of a subsequent structural analysis, including 3D modeling of the seven cantilevered deck truss spans over the Hudson River.
