We've all heard that "the eye is the window to the soul," but have you heard of strategically utilizing the visual system to get rid of pain, improve emotions and normalize countless health conditions that are otherwise difficult to treat? Today's conversation with Abe Al-baba EP-C, LPSN will knock your socks off with both the education he provides and the anecdotes he shares with how he helps his clients reach peak performance and/or improve their overall health status. I'm thrilled to be presenting at the upcoming ACLM conference, where we will introduce the Lifestyle Medicine & Physical Therapy Toolkit—a comprehensive resource designed to efficiently integrate lifestyle medicine into physical therapy practice. Packed with tools and strategies, it aims to prevent provider burnout, decrease healthcare costs, and improve patient outcomes. Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions play a significant role in chronic diseases—the leading cause of death and disability in the U.S. Recent research shows that individuals with MSK conditions like osteoarthritis and back pain are 17% more likely to develop a chronic disease. For instance, osteoarthritis increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. While preparing for my presentation, an MD reviewed my content and shared: "This is a fantastic topic! As a Family Medicine Doc, I am not used to thinking about Physical Therapists as lifestyle assessors for pillars outside the exercise pillar, although certainly reliant on PTs as critical members of the team. Your slides really opened my eyes to how much PTs can do to support the other pillars." This highlights a gap in understanding—even among healthcare providers—about the broader role physical therapy can play in preventing and managing chronic diseases. I'm excited to help expand our collective perspective beyond pain and mobility, embracing a whole-body approach for early intervention and better health outcomes.
