Roughly “55% of renters pay more than 30% of their income on rent and utilities” in California. As we can all understand spending close to have your income on rent is a burden. However, to see rent control as the saving grace for affordability is simply incorrect. In the LA Times, experts make a compelling case that more people have to hear: “Proposition 33 could create all kinds of unintended consequences. Cities that are anti-growth and don’t want any new housing built could use their authority over rent control (diabolically) to require that developers set extremely low rent caps on new apartment buildings, which would make new multifamily housing financially unfeasible.” Amongst other risks, the evidence is clear that this rent control is not the answer.
