Software developers, I genuinely enjoy helping you finding new, better opportunities... But there're somethings that would be helpful for you to know when job searching. It's no fault of your own as we probably don't tell you enough 🙂 1) If you're on a salary of £40k, it's a little unrealistic to expect the next role to be at £60k. It can (and does) happen, but it's rare. 2) A salary increase of 10% of your salary is good. 20% would be exceptional. 3) When preparing, go back to basics. You should be able to communicate, what you do, why you do it and general industry terms. 4) The single most important soft skill (from what I've seen) to display is the desire to continuously learn. 5) When it's your turn to ask questions in the interview, make sure you have two or three well constructed ones. Saying you have no questions is actually detrimental. 6) In this current market, the more willing you are to attend an office irregularly, the more opportunities you'll have available to you. 6) When you get an offer, it's completely normal to have second thoughts. Taking a new challenge can and should be a little scary. 7) If you're working for a consultancy, chances are your salary may be inflated compared to the market averages of working for a private software company. It can make things difficult when searching. A good recruiter is here to work with and for you, it's a team effort. Any advice a good recruiter shares with you is to better your chances at finding the right role. And you know what they say, the best time to start looking is when you 𝒅𝒐𝒏'𝒕 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅 a role.
