Legislation to add protections in housing and public accommodations has been introduced in the Missouri legislature since 1998. The bill has not passed. I looked at the legislation's history and its chances of passage for this longform piece.

"Broadway Christian Church promotes literacy with little library"
I wrote this story during the summer of 2014 for the Columbia Missourian. Marilyn McCreary, a Broadway Christian Church member, came up with the idea to put up a little library on church grounds. I tried to reach her for days so we could chat about her idea. I called her at work, messaged her on Facebook, called the church and emailed her — nothing. So, one Saturday, photographer Shannon Elliott and I showed up at…"Broadway Christian Church promotes literacy with little library"

I tried to reach her for days so we could chat about her idea. I called her at work, messaged her on Facebook, called the church and emailed her — nothing. So, one Saturday, photographer Shannon Elliott and I showed up at Broadway Christian Church and asked around for McCreary. We found her. Elliott, McCreary and I had a lovely conversation about McCreary's background as a teacher and her interest in literacy.
That same day, a local organization held a soccer camp for refugee children at a field right next to the church. Out of curiosity, Elliott and I walked up to the field and started chatting with some people. We found Taw Taw, a refugee from Myanmar, and Ammanuel Minuye, an Ethiopian boy. They were both happy to chat with us about the little library and give us their perspective: They both were interested in engineering and wanted more books on the topic.
I talked to two or more people for this story. At my editor's suggestion, I even read the "Velveteen Rabbit," McCreary's favorite children's book, to add more perspective to the story. Writing about McCreary's initiative and witnessing the church's interest in promoting literacy was truly an honor.
