I recommend this post by Alexandra Smith on "total journalism reach" -- The 19th's new readership metric. It's full of insights and data wisdom. One takeaway: prioritize consistency across platforms without being overly rigid. For example, #Instagram views get counted because their posts basically republish an abridged version of the story -- an increasingly common publishing strategy -- not just because the machine needs more #data. Above all, this model is attentive to the question of *why* we measure #readership. I've always felt that digital interactions are metaphorical -- as summed up in that now quaint adage: "tweets, not endorsements." What does readership *represent*? I'm sure you're seeing many posts covering the UK race riots, the news that Tim Walz is VP Kamala Harris' pick, the slowing of new jobs, the stock market volatility, the latest bombings in Gaza and the compounding list goes on. These situations are not outside of our organizations. Employees bring their experience of them into work. They are often carrying these emotions silently and alone. Antiracism Daily pointed out that the U.S. election is about social ideology. The vote we make is less about candidates and more about a direction, an identity of who we want to be by stating who we are. Employees are navigating an unbearable emotional load between personal life, professional responsibilities and external social pressures. #Communicators, we're going through it, too. We're not immune either. I'm inviting you to be in community with other communicators who are dealing with a lot of the same things you are. Employees and leaders need guidance from you.
