The cannabis industry is growing – so is the need for quality assurance and safety standards. In 2017, a diverse group of globally recognized industry leaders came together to form ASTM Committee D37 on Cannabis and began developing international standards for cannabis under the ASTM umbrella. This inclusive group empowers a cross section of voices in the industry to shape its future through the collaborative development of trusted standards. Emerging industries such as cannabis turn to ASTM International and our 120 years of experience as a leading international standards developer.

Everything grows better in community. ASTM International is an organization of inclusion – offering global access to fully transparent standards development, resulting in the highest technical excellence in standardization.

    https://www.astmcannabis.org/committee-d37-on-cannabis/

    https://www.astmcannabis.org/

Every approved standard goes through an established balloting and voting process to maintain balance among competing interests and ensure every stakeholder has a say. As a participating committee member, you have the chance to review and vote on new cannabis and hemp standards as well as important revisions to existing standards.

The best part and what makes ASTM International unique is that it is the only standards development organization that is not only recognized for meeting the World Trade Organization's Technical Barriers to Trade principles, but is literally open to all.

ASTM has approved a new subcommittee under D37.10 Finance and Insurance. The scope of this new committee will be the development and maintenance of international standards and guidance related to the financial and insurance needs of the cannabis industry, including but not limited to banking, lending, funding, investing, the public markets, payment processing and insurance.

Like those women who fought to end alcohol prohibition nearly a century ago, we recognize the harms cannabis prohibition is causing, and we are taking action to protect our families and communities. Our goal is to end prohibition and replace it with a system in which cannabis is legal and regulated in a manner that improves safety, advances justice, and fosters opportunity for all Floridians.

We are a diverse coalition of South Florida female business leaders passionate about harnessing the innovative power of women. By supporting the growth of female investors and women entrepreneurs, we hope to create a more diverse entrepreneurial ecosystem that reflects their strengths and leverages their unique power.

As a first step, we will launch our efforts by co-hosting a female-focused angel investment workshop in partnership with Startup Angels and the Cambridge Innovation Center (CIC Miami). Building on that momentum, we will then expand to develop a support network for mentorship and guidance for angel investors and female-founded startups. Over the course of 2017, we will host two workshops and collaborate with distinct partners to integrate into the investor community, as well as launch programming focused on female founders.

Creating an environment for women investors to thrive is essential to the innovation and diversity of entrepreneurial success in South Florida. When women begin investing, even in small amounts directed at female-founded companies, teams and solutions, they shift the world. By educating and supporting women as they make their first forays into angel investment, we will continue to push progress towards a more equitable world.

Emerging South Florida entrepreneurs, show us what you’ve got!

Today we launch our 19th Miami Herald Business Plan Challenge, our annual celebration of South Florida innovation in one of the most entrepreneurial regions in the nation. If you have a business idea or an operating startup under 2 years old, you can enter.

Sponsored by the Pino Global Entrepreneurship Center at Florida International University, our contest welcomes business plan entries from any industry. There are three tracks: a Community Track, open to all South Floridians; an FIU Track, open to FIU students and alumni; and a High School Track, co-sponsored by the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship.

Don’t let the name of the contest scare you: We don’t want long, laboriously detailed business plans. Today’s investors in early-stage companies want to see a succinct presentation of your concept and how you plan to turn it into a success. So do we. Your entry may be up to three pages, and you may attach one additional page for a photo, chart or diagram if you wish. Think of it as a meaty executive summary. Experts in all aspects of entrepreneurship — serial entrepreneurs, executives, investors, advisers and academics — will judge your short plan.

    Music
SXSW Music is the largest music festival of its kind in the world, with more than 2,000 acts as of 2014. SXSW Music offers artist-provided music and video samples of featured artists at each festival via their official YouTube channel.

The music event has grown from 700 registrants in 1987 to over 28,000 registrants. SXSW Film and SXSW Interactive events have grown every year, most recently bringing over 51,000 registrants to Austin every March.

    Film
SXSW Film Conference spans five days of conference panels and sessions, and welcomes filmmakers of all levels. Programming consists of keynote speakers, panels, workshops, mentor sessions and more, with expert filmmakers and industry leaders.

In 2015, the SXSW Film Conference programmed over 250 sessions with 735 speakers. Although the film festival often highlights independently produced films and emerging directing talent with unique visions, the festival has long served studios as a starting point for their comedies, using enthusiastic fans as a barometer of how they might play in wide release.

In 2015, the SXSW Film Festival programmed 150 feature films and 106 short films, selected from 7,361 submissions.

    Interactive
SXSW Interactive is focused on emerging technology, a focus which has earned the festival a reputation as a breeding ground for new ideas and creative technologies. The festival includes a trade show, speakers, parties, and a startup accelerator. According to a festival organizer Louis Black, SXSW Interactive "has probably been the biggest of its kind in the world" since 2007.
