“During the timeframe that I knew and later worked with and for Dave (2006 to 2011) I considered him to be a very effective manager and leader. Dave exhibited a very positive attitude about AREVA and the work at hand. He ensured that the nationwide civil/structural group that he managed, maintained focus, strategy, and workload sharing by having a weekly manager meeting (via teleconference and in person with those located in Charlotte, NC). He ensured that a business planning meeting took place on a bi-annual basis so that all of the leaders of the various offices could join together in one location and discuss what was going right and what was going wrong with the group. The business planning meeting was a way that he empowered the other leaders within the organization to help set the direction and tone for the overall nationwide group. Dave led with his head and heart by exhibiting empathy and compassion for all of the members within the group. He was always providing honest feedback both good and bad. His feedback was valued by all members as it helped people to improve but also to relish in the times when positive praise was received which occurred frequently. This was a great trait that Dave exhibited as you always knew what he was thinking and knew how you were doing. End of the year performance reviews were never a surprise as you already knew how you were performing throughout the year. Dave’s manner of feedback motivated the people that worked for him which in turn allowed the group to continuously receive positive feedback from the various clients that the group performed work for. When things didn’t go quite right Dave was not one to throw blame at someone else but instead shared in the responsibility to make things right and to help to ensure the needed corrective actions were put in place. Dave was very effective in making decisions in a short amount of time. He would empower the other leaders within the organization to make the necessary decisions but if those decisions didn’t come in the needed timeframe he would step in and made the needed decision. In conclusion, during my 37 year career as an engineer, supervisor, and manager I have not had a better leader to work for than Dave McGuire. He has a way of bringing out the best in all of his employees and making them feel valued, care about, and wanting to come to work. It is not the work, salary, or location that makes a job great, it is the leader of the group that makes the job great. I can honestly say that from the timeframe of 2008 to 2011 when I was a direct report of Dave’s that it was the best part of my long engineering career. Any organization would be blessed by having Dave within it. Kevin C. Anstee, PE ”
