PLU consists of the College of Arts and Sciences (including of the Divisions of Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences), the School of Arts and Communication, the School of Business, the School of Education and Kinesiology, and the School of Nursing.

A central tenet of Lutheran higher education – and core to PLU’s mission – is the emphasis on education for lives of service, and finding one’s calling, or vocation. To support students and faculty as they explore life's big questions and engage in fulfilling and meaningful work, the university established the Wild Hope Center for Vocation, originally through a grant from the Lilly Endowment.

  • Activities and Societies: I've flown over 2 million miles to 26 countries and made many friends. I've eaten everything from Michelin gourmet to dodgy street food. I've stayed in a variety of homes, from luxurious to cramped, from clean to dirt floors, from modern plumbing to outhouses and communal wells. Authenticity trumps comfort. Embracing foreign cultures gives me perspective. Don't rush. Listen. Observe. Step by step, establish credibility and trust. Rely on local people as guides.

Respecting differences gets you called back to win the deal.
We all share common values regardless of nationality. Love. Fear. Laughter. Random acts of kindness. I have more in common with the majority of people on our planet than language or citizenship may indicate otherwise. I eat local food, use public transportation, and talk to strangers. I’ve learned phrases in many languages. People think I am fluent in a dozen languages. I am not. But I try.

  • Global Partnerships

    - Present

After years in Professional Services, I proposed a charter for a new organization to identify strategic partners in our ecosystem for mutually beneficial, joint go to market initiatives. By leveraging partnerships, we sell together, sell with, sell through, sell for each other. We keep each other informed about product roadmap changes, look for trade shows where we showcase each others' products and services as a solution instead of a component, and refer business opportunities to each other…

We keep each other informed about product roadmap changes, look for trade shows where we showcase each others' products and services as a solution instead of a component, and refer business opportunities to each other. This expanded our opportunity funnel by 60% and resulted in win-win business.

  • 5 year anniversary at Quickplay

    - Present

My 5th anniversary at Quickplay was March 7. Some milestones:
*Signed my offer letter on March 7 while living in Tokyo. Got hit by the huge 2011 earthquake 4 days later. Thought my building was going to collapse. Experienced dozens of aftershocks larger than the 1989 Bay-Area earthquake. Sheltered in place for radiation fallout. Almost decided to rescind my offer letter and stay in Japan because my heart was with the Japanese people during the disaster.

*Initially told to relocate to Seattle. But then redirected to San Diego where Quickplay acquired the former MediaFlo datacenter from Qualcomm. I believe I was California employee #2. The abandoned MediaFlo datacenter looked like an end of the world disaster movie. Computers, televisions fading in and out. Half filled coffee cups left behind. As if an entire company of people suddenly disappeared one day. It was a very spooky office for many weeks until we got more staff and cleaned up.
*Initially in Professional Services assigned to Sales, worked on AT&T, TVB, Telus, Qualcomm, Samsung, Verizon, Bloomberg, Singtel, and a myriad of presales opportunities.
*Made the initial trips to pitch Singtel solo in summer 2012, eventually joined by Wayne and Martinez, eventually handed over to Tash and Bill. Many a night spent supporting Tash remotely, including Christmas Eve 2013. (Thank you Baruch for your help at 2am.)
*Got busy with Qualcomm for LTE-B field trials. Vodafone Spain, Valencia CF. Thanks Alvin!
*December 2014, proposed the charter for an expanded Partnership team with Peter Chapman. Vision to join forces and leverage resources from qualified partners in our ecosystem to expand our business more effectively than we could possibly do organically. Approved.
*New opportunities in Japan and Latin America. Looking forward to cementing these new relationships and building value for my partners and our customers. AT&T has a lot of international offices. Hmmmm... what can we leverage?

Singtel came to QuickPlay for help in enabling premium video services in several of their network partners in Asia. I had the pleasure of handling the initial meetings in Singapore to start the value proposition, business discussions, and technical solution definition. After it was clear that we were going forward with Singtel, I helped Tash Stamatelos and Bill Lim as they took over the account.

  • TVB OTT Service, Hong Kong

    -

QuickPlay Media enabled a complete OTT service for Hong Kong customers to enjoy TVB's content on mobile devices -- including iOS, Android, and Android-based TV dongles. We provided VOD, Live TV, and Live Events. It was the most popular app in Hong Kong for quite some time. TVB took over the service and pulled it in-house in 2013. I miss the many happy meetings with TVB's dedicated staff in Hong Kong at TVB's fascinating Production Studios.
