📚 Holiday weekend reading: “Plurality.” This philosophical approach applies open technologies to foster diverse collaboration and coordination and solve our societal challenges. Technology can and will bring diverse viewpoints together with the transparent debates needed to come to coordinated solutions. These open technologies today encompass the powerful capabilities in our innovation systems today: open source #AI models, permissionless #blockchain, community #web3tokens, interoperable #metaverses, among the many public goods enabled by emerging technologies. Our social relationships provide the universal values and effective direction for such innovations to impact our world towards positive sum growth. “Plurality” is the central subject of a new book by Microsoft’s internal economist Glen Weyl and Taiwan’s former Minister of Digital Affairs Audrey Tang. That book collects ideas in a donation supported ebook.

Legislation for Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is gaining traction as NYC lawmakers are advocating for IAQ monitoring in schools, providing parents, teachers, and students with crucial insights into the air they breathe. Boston has already set an example by putting its IAQ monitoring online for schools, allowing for immediate issue resolution. The joining of Google Next Renew and OhmConnect signals some validation of an effort started some eight years ago. Championed by Dave Wechsler, Curtis Snyder and Jon Kaplowitz, we worked to develop a virtual power-plant by giving away XFINITY HOME connected thermostats in exchange for demand response agreements. With enough concentration this would prove to reduce consumption on demand. Unfortunately, initial success gave way to larger competing priorities. We must continue to invest in the nation's infrastructure in a way that benefits and rewards customers, improves reliability and reduces human impact on the environment. I'm eager to see how this partnership will deliver a substantial impact in energy efficiency, demand response, grid optimization, and customer engagement. It's a promising step. I have invested in some consumer electronics hardware startups for over a decade, and have seen some fail and some succeed. Consumer hardware is HARD. Consumers expect close to perfect products that at least promise to do many things for them, product price can typically only go down from launch day onwards, and there are so many balls to juggle simultaneously in taking product through launch shipping. Biggest mistake is often this: perfect is the enemy of good. Steve Jobs may have said consumers don't know what they want, but you are no Steve Jobs - so get real consumer feedback as early as possible vs building in stealth forever. Lastly, plan ahead for next 2-3 rounds of financing. Money will be hardest to get when you need it most, and quality of investors drops sharply because there are few exit paths half-way through. This is something most executives who come from large consumer electronics companies and may have great experience in product design, engineering, supply chain management, manufacturing, logistics, pricing, distribution channels, marketing etc, don't know enough about.

▶ 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗔𝗖𝗧 On this exact day, August 8, 1995, in Mountain View, California, Netscape Communications Corporation went public, marking one of the most significant moments in the history of the internet and the stock market. ▶ 𝗪𝗛𝗬 𝗜𝗧 𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗦 The Netscape IPO is widely regarded as a key event that triggered the dot-com boom of the late 1990s. It was a turning point that demonstrated the immense potential and value of internet-based companies, sparking a wave of investment in tech startups. This event also highlighted the rapid growth of the internet and its profound impact on businesses, communication, and society as a whole. ▶ 𝗠𝗬 𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗧𝗦 𝗢𝗡 𝗜𝗧 The Netscape IPO symbolizes the beginning of a new era in technology and finance. It shows how quickly innovation can change the landscape of an entire industry. While it led to the rise of many successful tech companies, it also served as a cautionary tale, as the resulting dot-com bubble eventually burst. This case also comes with a lesser-known situation: Marc Andreessen had previously developed the Mosaic browser but didn’t reach an agreement with the University of Illinois regarding IP issues and commercialization. He then decided to leave and move to California, where he started Netscape. The message is clear: having an environment, including the institutions, processes, and regulatory frameworks, conducive to innovation—specifically turning new solutions into commercial applications and entities—is essential to nurture entrepreneurship and advance the economy. Inventing or creating something does not suffice by itself. Fast forward, Andreessen Horowitz is now a leading venture capital firm and has backed many of today’s fast-growing tech startups.
