Michigan's largest health insurer, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, is stopping coverage for glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) drugs used for weight loss starting in January 2025. This affects nearly 10,000 members currently taking the medication. BCBS Michigan cites concerns about safety, effectiveness, and cost for this decision. Their pharmaceutical costs rose significantly in 2023, with GLP-1 drugs contributing a substantial portion of the increase. These medications can be expensive, reaching over $15,000 annually. While some GLP-1 drugs are approved for type 2 diabetes (and sometimes prescribed off-label for weight loss), only Wegovy (by Novo Nordisk) and Zepbound (by Eli Lilly) have specific FDA approval for weight management. Research by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association also suggests that almost 60% of patients prescribed GLP-1 drugs for weight loss stop taking them before experiencing significant benefits. Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Wegovy, expressed disappointment with BCBS Michigan's decision. Currently, roughly half of commercial insurers cover Wegovy. Learn more: https://hubs.ly/Q02BJjJm0
