A 2022 report from the National Disability Institute predicted that autonomous vehicles could help many people with disabilities get out of their homes and obtain jobs. Tom Foley, the group’s executive director, said a lack of transportation often causes isolation, which can lead to mental health problems. “There’s an epidemic of loneliness, particularly for older people and particularly for people with disabilities. For now, most riders who use wheelchairs need attendants to secure them inside a van before it starts moving. But researchers are looking into ways to automate that task so people who use wheelchairs can take advantage of fully autonomous vehicles.” #autonomousvehicles #disability #mobilitylifestyle

At our recent ProjectNext Leadership planning offsite, we talked about the state of leadership. We are noticing that few, if any, of the young adults we know are interested in political leadership (do you know any?). And while most corporate leaders want promotions, the discussion is often more about the pay and prestige than it is about the role itself of being a leader. In fact, at this moment, the demands and responsibilities of leadership seem pretty unappealing to many people. We believe it’s part of the reason that leadership pipelines are leaky in the middle right now, particularly around the Director level. Our company mission is to Change the Landscape of Leadership. What would it take for leadership to be seen as an honor, not a burden? For leaders to recognize that instead of the old paradigm of leaders needing all the answers, to realize that leadership today is more about leveraging the expertise of others and painting a vision that brings others along? What if this AI revolution was being led in a way that enhanced employees’ and customers’ experiences, rather than as just a perceived threat to jobs? We believe all this is possible. And not only possible, but necessary. A CMO of a leading technology company recently shared with us the key traits he looks for in leaders. What was on the top of the list? Optimism. As Bob Iger likes to say, “No one wants to follow a pessimist.” We agree, and in our 2024 Leadership Insights Report to be published next month, we will offer data on progress and opportunities on the current state of corporate leadership. We believe that, together, we can change the landscape of leadership. What would that look like for you?

My two cents on – Measuring Impact and investment vs cost Too often non-profit organizations rely on grants and philanthropy to execute against their missions fall into the trap of soliciting funds by demonstrating low cost-to-funds ratios. However, what this unfortunately leads to are organizations that are always at the brink of survival, always just scraping by year-over-year. This is not to say that maintaining a sound budget and managing operating costs is not important, but it often leaves out the very necessary reality that sometimes additional capital is needed to make the right future investments in the organization. If we used a for-profit company as a comparison point, investors would expect management to drive the organization forward, anticipating a greater direct investment in the present for future returns. This common marketplace understanding assumes the organization will use upfront investments to drive greater revenue, market reach, or streamlined operations sustainably. Unfortunately, non-profits rarely demonstrate or drive towards this model. What I and a growing trend suggest instead is that organizations focus on what funds they need to make a scalable, meaningful impact in their chosen area of concern. To drive your organization towards operational sustainability and growth in its chosen cause, a significant mental and cultural shift is required. This involves moving from asking for funds as help to presenting opportunities for investments that yield meaningful, measurable impact. This shift entails re-examining basic services, such as, potentially identifying monetizable segments to support non-monetizable bases. This may mean getting bigger faster, think of a tech startup that loses money to gain market share in order to get economies of scale that will payoff later. The second half is to look how the operational structure and costs are needed to support the new business model. What are the upfront infrastructure and ongoing operational costs needed to run things smoothly and efficiently. While, this is easy to say, the devils are in the detail and each case brings its own challenges and opportunities.
