The mention of EGD triggers thoughts of signage or graphic wallcoverings, but it’s much more than that—it embraces graphic design, architecture, industrial design, landscape architecture, visual identity, and branded environments, and touches on a variety of design elements, from wayfinding to shaping a sense of place. It requires a multidisciplinary design approach to communicate stories, inform people, and organize places for efficient navigation.

Workplace strategy, architecture, interiors, branding, and landscape planning for a 350,000 corporate headquarters in Miami on Dodge Island. Inspired by the hospitality-oriented and experience-driven cruise industry, the interior environment supports the brand’s ethos. An open plan for most of the workplace floors will facilitate collaboration among different departments with a variety of technology-enhanced meeting spaces. The building’s boomerang shape allows natural daylight to reach deep into the floor plates. Interior stairs connecting each floor follow the building curves, promoting wellness and collaboration.

Other amenities include an innovation center, auditorium, training rooms and a restaurant-like cafe. An executive suite and event space are on the top floors, wrapping around the lush sky garden and offering views to Biscayne Bay and downtown Miami.

The team applied waiting-area research findings to design the Portico collection of seating and tables for public waiting areas. The Capri, Milano and Prato collections are beautiful and comfortable and features a versatile design for use in healthcare, hospitality and corporate environments.

Emotions influence how people respond to their near environments. A Northwestern University survey found that interior settings with curvilinear lines elicit more pleasant emotions such as relaxation. Another finding was that behavior patterns in hospital waiting rooms were consistent with those found in other public areas such as libraries and cafeterias.

A Duke University Medical Center study confirmed that visitors tend to wait in small groups of up to three people and that visitor groups prefer to sit alone. This research also showed that chairs are wasted as spatial barriers and that people prefer corner arrangements for conversing.

The IOA Portico collection provides seating options and tables for intimate groupings. Larger curved arrangements that create distance and barriers can be turned away from each other to accommodate individuals who prefer to sit alone. A variety of arrangements allow a space to flex as social patterns change in waiting or group areas.

Each piece of the Portico collection meets the Healthy Interiors goals of the Healthier Hospitals Initiative’s Safer Chemicals Challenge.
