The University of California (UC) is consistently on the cutting edge of Artificial Intelligence (AI) research and development. While AI can pose significant gains in efficiency, effectiveness, and equity, ill-conceived deployments risk imposing disproportionate harms. In order to guide the appropriate implementation of AI within the UC system, President Drake formed a Presidential Working Group that is charged with developing overarching ethical principles and guides for the University’s current and future use of AI.

The Presidential Working Group will develop UC Ethical AI Principles to guide the development and application of AI in ways that are consistent with UC's mission and values. The final report will also provide recommendations to President Drake regarding best practices and guidance to:
Develop methods and mechanisms to operationalize the UC Ethical AI Principles in the use of existing AI systems and the development of new applications of AI within the UC system, especially in areas likely to impact individual rights, including Health, Human Resources, Policing, and Student Experience.

Working with faculty and staff leaders across UC to develop training and policies for responsible AI implementation.

Andrew Hart of JPL gave a 30 minute talk that focuses on the technology of OODT and introduces two distinct applications of OODT to health care: the Early Detection Research Network, a collaboration with the National Cancer Institute (NCI), for sharing of cancer biomarker data; and ongoing work with the Laura P. and Leland K. Whittier Virtual Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (Whittier VPICU) at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) to create a grid-based data management system for intensive care data. There followed a 15 Q&A session with Andrew and David Kale and Roby Khemani of CHLA.

The Capstone Project is defined as being a multifaceted assignment that serves as a culminating academic and intellectual experience for students, typically during their final year of high school or middle school, or at the end of an academic program or learning-pathway experience.

With our Internationalization (i18n) Product Retrieval Service (iPReS) proposal we were very fortune to have been accepted to participate in this program with a number of students from Oregon State University.

The iPReS project aims to implement a web service and client providing i18n-type access to products and product metadata contained within NASA JPL's Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center otherwise known as PO.DAAC.

The software implements a RESTful Apache CXF web-service and client to obtain data from the PO.DAAC Web-Services API. It then translates the product metadata into a target language provided along with the initial call to the service.

Best to have fun and hope to keep the party going this year.

First thanks to the 43 people who responded. The list is eclectic and I think pretty deep. It has a total as of today (February 17th) of 168 on it, and here is the crazy part. Other than the “obvious” or repeat ones, no one was suggested more than once. I can’t recall that ever happening but it shows we all have our eyes on other people, and people out some thought into this.

While I asked for no repeats, there were a few people who were suggested because they are in a different place or career now, and they too are noted below. And while Sam Bankman-Fried was on the list last year, no he wasn’t mentioned this. Also the quotes are directly from those who nominated…

Chris Mattmann- “He is literally a rocket scientist at NASA while moonlighting co-launching The Sporting Tribune with Arash Markazi. The goal is to sit at the intersection of sports and entertainment, with a hand on each one. Let’s see if Chris rockets off this new venture.”
